Adrift - what the hell happened at the end?

Just watched Adrift last night - god it was irritating but had to sit it out. Anyway we have no idea whether Dan and her were dead at the end when she was standing on the deck and you could hear the baby crying.

That boat came along and you couldnt see her but could hear sarah crying and then the boat left and she was on deck with Dan lying on the deck - so dont understand if she was alive why didnt boat man see her and if she was dead why did he leave the baby behind?

My sister says she is dead but I dont agree - help please to decipher this --aaaggghhh!

In case anyone else comes across this ... the film is complete garbage but there seem to be three popular interpretations of the ending ...

  1. The director intentionally filmed two endings and put both on so that the audience could decide for themselves how it ended.

  2. It's a bad piece of film angle/cutting: the mum is alive but in shock (hence her not responding to the baby) and the young man is either dead or unconscious and the guy on the tug simply hasn't got round the yacht far enough to see them.

  3. All the adults from the yacht are dead and what we see on the deck are ghosts or some sort of psychic memory of the drowned. The guy on the tug stops and rescues the baby.

There you go. I favour #1 personally since neither of the other two really make sense.

Dh and I watched this last night and rather enjoyed it, though I being a soppy cow could only watch it once DH had told me the baby was OK!!!!

Would love to know what the 'true' events were, have tried looking in the net and that's where I came across this - silly me, knew I should have gone to MN first.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 24/03/2009 08:12

It was a load of crap, imo. BUT I'd got 60 mins in and couldn't really turn it over.

I was glad the stupid blonde moggle type snuffed it first though.

Couldn't stay up to watch end on a school night ;o) (Primary taecher!) but was so engrossed up until bit where two girls and dan left... had to google to find out what happened. From all the comments about the confusing ending, I'm glad I didn't stay up! I'd never have slept for trying to figure it out! Anyway, I found this Wikipedia page filled in the story for me:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Water_2:_Adrift

Not sure why link changes when I post it but just google 'adrift film ending wikipedia' ... Computers!!!!!

peterzav · 08/01/2017 11:06

It is obvious what happened, the mother and the other bloke survived and came to the deck when they herd the rescue boat came to their aid.

whyohwhy000 · 08/01/2017 11:10

One interpretation is that all 6 adults die, and the other scene is some sort of memory.

Jux · 24/03/2017 23:20

Fell asleep half way thread ough.

AgentZigzag · 15/03/2018 01:22

Don't worry Jux you didn't miss anything, the film and ending are both total shite.

I love it that this thread keeps coming up - for eleven bloody years! Grin

merryCalongeCases · 25/06/2018 03:24

My interpretation is: The girl had a bad experience with her dad drowning when she was a little girl, and attempted to save her dad but she was too little to lift him up and save him, so he obviously drowned and died. So when it happened again with a friend, she tried to save him and she was strong enough to bring him aboard, but there is possibility that the guy is already dead, but the point is she was able to lift him up and carry him on board instead of him falling in the bottom of the sea. In my opinion, the movie sucks because there was no certainty if it ended tragically to all of them or the three of them had hope that they could still be alive and survived. But hey, the director said let the audience keep wondering what happened. POS.

What computery/internet shenanigans bumps this on to my list of trending topics?????

Is there a ghost in the machine?

I think this proves that option 3 is the most likely - ghosts

ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT

Vitalogy · 13/08/2018 17:08

Well there's a new 2018 film I've yet to see, The trailer looks good, although for some reason I can't get on with the female lead.

Is this a remake? It looks good!
sakura06 · 13/08/2018 17:40

The new film is based on a true story, and isn't a remake. Strange this thread has been resurrected...

Vitalogy · 13/08/2018 17:43

Oh right, that's cleared that up then. Smile

Pidge4 · 19/08/2018 02:14

WOW. thanks!! I want to see it now, esp. since it's based on truth! Smile

Pidge4 · 19/08/2018 02:16

I just watched 3 of these!! I think it's a shark marathon week here!

thecruisemermaid · 20/08/2018 04:12

It's funny I found this post ... I just watched "Open Water Adrift 2" and was mortified thinking it was a true story ... (Well based on true events. ..) and by all means you can totally see how this scenario could have happened ... But my gosh ... You'd THINK the main guy that owned or rented or heck stole the yacht would at least know to put the ladder down once everyone started jumping in ...

What an all around mega depressing movie though but yeah about the ending ... I think they made it back on board. . not sure the guy was alive but at least the mom and baby were alive ...

I couldn't understand the girl "swimming for shore ..." ... Apparently she was shark bait ... And I couldn't understand the guy "searching the water for the knife ..." Like that was ever gonna happen. . the knife would have long long long sank ..... Oh and then too ... You'd have thought that somehow someone would have thought sooner of climbing on each other to get up ... Oh and how about an "emergency ladder release ?" Wouldn't that be smart to have ? Although "pirates " could board easily ... So many scenarios ...... And what a sad sad movie ....

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 03/09/2018 06:27

This is on my local odeon as a silver screen film, im undecided about it. The trailer looks like not much happens tbh

FOR loved-up young adventurer Tami Oldham, sailing a yacht across the Pacific with her sexy fiancé was meant to be 4,000 miles of sun-kissed bliss.
But 20 days in to their dream voyage, a hurricane struck — whipping up waves as tall as skyscrapers.
As they smashed down on the couple’s 44ft boat, Tami, 23, looked into the “electric blue eyes” of her handsome British lover Richard Sharp and saw fear.
He insisted she take cover below deck while he tried to steer the Hazana to safety, then gave her a reassuring wink as she headed downwards. She never saw him again.
Moments later American Tami heard Richard, 34, cry out: “Oh my God”. She was then thrown against the side, knocking her unconscious.
When she came to 27 hours later Richard was gone and she was all alone on the ocean, up to her waist in water on the wrecked yacht.
It had lost its masts, engine, radio equipment and its electronic navigation system, and Tami had lost the love of her life, her soulmate.
But incredibly she managed to guide the crippled boat 1,500 miles to the nearest land in a 41-day voyage that has now been made into movie Adrift, which I hope this answers some questions.

LoafofSellotape · 01/06/2019 22:47

I just watched the new film and thought it was great, could've been awful but the actors were well cast imo.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with the OP though Grin
