I went to see this last night, really enjoyed it. I’m not sure what I’d expected but it definitely wasn’t this, the wealth & extravaganze portrayer was amazing. Fascinating and fun.

I was hoping there'd be a thread on this.

Is it me or would you not be absolutely RAGING to have turned up to a glamorous cocktail party in a cheap high street tea dress?

Only her friend saved her from being an absolute laughing stock on the night

He should've bought her some appropriate pieces he could still have kept his wealth quiet.

It's a dumpable offence IMO AngryGrin

You’re right, it was unfair of him to spring his family’s wealth on her, especially as she was a professor at NYU, it’s not as if she was a naive 19 year old. Interestingly in the US you have the job title professor at a far earlier stage than in the UK (friend of mine was a prof at 25/26 in NYC). The red dress fitted her really badly - front & back.

A friend of mine who grew up in Hong Kong said to me she thought there was too much kissing (euphemism for sex?) in the film, I’d hardly noticed it.

I loved the way they showed the connections zapping backwards and forwards at the start of the film when they were in the cafe & his mother was at her Bible study group.

It was an enjoyable watch but one thing that really grated me was the beginning and the portrayal of the family’s experience at a London hotel supposedly in 1995. They might have got away with it if it was 1965 but not that recent.

Enjoyed the book and interested to see the film. but much too much of the book was describing the wealth and people’s looks. Poor plot and character development.

Loved this but why wasn't she more cheesed off to find he had his background, did she not wonder any point why he was so well off? How? Why??
