Anyone seen it yet? We went last night and it was packed. I tend to go along with Dh to Marvel films out of a sense of duty but tbh I do always enjoy them. I thought it was amazing, still thinking about it today.

Yes agree, it was amazing any has left a lasting impression on me. I normally don't go to cinema, certainly not for a Marvel film, but this was so much more than that. Extremely thought provoking.

I went with two teenage lads ( not my own) because I had to. I was prepared to have a nap or something. I ended up really enjoying it.
We stayed until the very last bit!

Loved it, if I get time I'm going to watch it again. I especially loved how they portray the women as intelligent, equal in battle, respected and peacemakers. I was really impressed with the costumes. I'm going to stop because I'm in danger of gushing

Loved it. Great film. Great action, humour and cast. Loved the strong women and good to see black men and women in positive roles not stereotyped. Looking forward to the next one

Saw it today and loved it-a very powerful message or two in there.
To PP above, I took my 11 & 9 year olds and the LOVED it!
But the kids wouldn't let me stay till the last minute! 😱😱😱 What happened?

I saw it last week and I'm planning to go and see it again, absolutely loved it!
It was very well done, so many different layers to it. I'm taking my daughter to see it too. She's 6 but I feel like it's suitable for younger kids as even though there is some violence, it's not over the top and gory.

We went to see it yesterday and were pretty disappointed. Great design and music but thin characters and we thought Wakunda made very little sense. Plus it felt very much about black America and not Africa centric at all (especially the final bit). In particular we thought it made zero sense for a technologically advanced nation to use hand to hand combat to determine succession in an absolute monarchy. The problem that then occurred (being careful not to give any spoilers) was entirely predictable and totally avoidable.

On balance it was enjoyable enough but nothing special, how it got 97% on Rotten Tomato is beyond me, critics rating have become completely unreliable. I'd not rate it as one of the better Marvel movies although it makes up a bit for the white washing in Dr Strange (which is the only Marvel we've not seen and will not be seeing). I do however hope it is successful and leads to more black actors in lead roles.

It doesn't make up for any white washing at all. It just reinforced every mainstream negative stereotype about black people there is. From the angry urban black man, to the noble savage who just happens to have technology (that was granted not via hard work but by the fluke of being in the vicinity of a special metal. Subtle finger wagging there about black folks getting above themselves).Even the few positive messages there were were subtly warped.
Without going into spoilers, don't even get me started on some of the things they decided to armour plate. Disney also couldn't resist with the snickering behind their hands references to and self promotion of the Lion King, subtle yet face palming.

I enjoyed it, but was ever so slightly disappointed. It was fun and enjoyable, but didn't blow me away like I thought it would.

The female characters were all amazing though and I think I would have preferred a film about any of the main female characters: Shuri, Nakia or Okoye. T'challa is just a bit too nice (a fantastic trait in real life, but maybe not so engrossing for a main character in a film).

I'd be really interested in an analysis along those lines (after spoilers cease to be an issue). I just know that a lot of it made me very uncomfortable. However as I'm white I'm almost certainly going to be a lot less sensitive to the nuances (I can see issues I feel concerned about as a feminist woman much more easily because I'm attuned to them). Re the white washing I guess I was just thinking that making and promoting a film with multiple decent roles for black people made up in some way for removing a non white character from another film from the same stable. Unlike Wonder Woman from DC they also spent a decent amount of money on both production and promotion which is something too.

msjolly all Marvel films have a scene inserted in the middle of the credits and another right at the end. We saw it tonight. I enjoyed it but wasn't sure whether to feel uncomfortable about some of the African imagery etc. There were a lot of roles for black actors and especially women which is good. There were a lot of black people in the cinema who all really seemed to enjoy it so maybe I should put aside my white middle class hang ups?!
