The Post: Has anyone seen it yet?

Looks great and want to see it. Am trying to work out if it will engage my kids, who loved Hidden Figures and enjoy thrillers and historical dramas. They are 12 and 10. Trump has prompted a lot of dinner table discussion about politics, democracy, truth etc, so I don’t think it would be too hard to draw parallels with current events to help to explain the relevance of the Nixon era & events in The Post. Does it nip along, or do you think its best left to the grown ups?

I was wondering the same thing although my DCs are a little older. They loved Hidden Figures too.

I realised after posting yesterday that its not on general release yet - twas only the UK premiere this week. Have discussed it with my boys and they were up for seeing it, so I think we’ll give it a go. It’s being released as a 12A, so its potential boredom rather than dodgy content I’m bothered about. I’ll report back in due course.

Reporting back. DS2 (10) said on the way out: “It was really talky, Mum, but I enjoyed it!” All 4 of us loved the old school (pre-computer) tech. The kids were fascinated by the manual type-setting and industrial-scale printing presses at tge Washington Post. The central court case was highly relevant to current attempts by the executive to denigrate and curtail the freedom of the press and it had plenty to say (show, really) about the challenges of a woman doing business in a man’s world. All in all, it was bloody terrific. Some of the supporting actors really stood out too.

We accidentally went to a subtitled disabled accessible screening, which was a bit distracting & (by moments only) gave away upcoming dialogue that messed with the pacing of some of the revelations. The swears were also subtitled in all their glory too. That was my only grrr.

We agreed on the way out of the cinema that we’d watch “the sequel” at home - All the President’s Men.

I've just been to see this and really enjoyed it.
However one thing puzzled me: At the beginning of the film, the scenes in Vietnam and Daniel Ellsberg stealing/copying the papers were set in 1966. Then the film moved forward to 1971. I was left wondering why 5 years elapsed before Dan passed the papers to the NY Times?

You're lucky to have seen it with subtitles. I really struggled to make out what was going on, especially at the beginning. I just couldn't hear what the characters were saying, Meryl Streep, in particular.

I thought it was disappointing. Not a patch on All the President's Men.

Forgot to add, I enjoyed the film, loved watching them put the paper together at the presses. I am planning on watching All the President's Men as I have never seen it.

We downloaded All The Presidents Men but DH keeps nodding off. Must try again this weekend

Just saw The Post. Found it a little pedestrian. The history is too familiar, and the outcome was not in doubt, so it lacked a bit of drama for me. Bob Odenkirk was great though!

I saw it last week, I thought it was too long, there was no need for it to be dragged out over 2hrs!

Important story, but just because it’s important doesn’t mean it can’t be told within a standard film timeframe & especially since everyone knows what the outcome is!!

I enjoyed it very much, although it was rather worthy - especially the bit after the hearing with all the young woman surrounding Meryl streep. But Spielberg films usually do err in that direction IMO.
