IMVHO, his Oscar last night was really a recognition for the oversight by the Academy for the films where he should have won Oscars, namely
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Casino
Gangs of New York.

The Departed is not in the same category as these films, especially Goodfellas. I'm glad he got his Oscar though. It was long overdue. IMVHO of course.

agree definitely

Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are masterpieces

much like Al Pacino getting his Oscar for Scent of a Woman

it's all a bit daft really - remember they gave one to Ron Howard for A Beautiful Mind. And Robert Altman never got one. Oh the injustice....

isn't the Departed a remake of Infernal Affairs (really rather good Korean movie)

(I'm not comparing The Departed to Scent of a Woman btw, just that it's not in the same league as his early films)

The Departed is a remake of the much superior Internal Affairs which is based in Hong Kong.

Al Pacino should have got Oscars for Godfather Part II, Serpico, Carlito's Way, Any Given Sunday, Devil's Advocate and Donny Brasco. The fact that he got it for Scent of a Spiderwoman is laughable.

Also, Samuel L Jackson should have won the oscar for best actor over Martin Landau for Ed Wood. What on earth was the academy thinking when they made that decision?

And don't get me started on how the Colour Purple did not win any of the 11 Oscars for which it was nominated? Steven Spielberg (who was not even nominated) and Whoopi Goldberg were robbed!

Should add that Sean Penn was absolutely sensational as Kleinswelt and he should have got an Oscar too as well as Brain de Palma.

glad Marty finally got the honour, haveta agree it was probably because he'd not got one before and the academy felt guilty !....my fave Scorsese (if anyones interested lol) has to be Mean Streets (closely followed by King of Comedy).

I was very pleased that Martin Scorsese finally received an Oscar ("about time" echoed in our house!). And whilst I do agree that The Departed is not as phenomenal as some of his other work, it was still a brilliant film and a worthy winner nonetheless(IMO)

King of Comedy is one the best films ever made!! Scorcese with his original muse!

Also, while I agree that Al Pacino should/could easily have received recognition for Carlito's Way... Tom Hanks won that year for Philadelphia, and his performance was stunning (IMO)
