We enjoyed every minute of this film but we are Star Trek fans. It was very active with a lot of fighting, explosions, guns which I would usually find overwhelming but it was really well done, great fun and very entertaining. I suppose the plot and the great reveal were a bit predictable but I can forgive that. The fx are brilliant as are the characterisations and Simon Pegg's Scottish accent even sounded ok (to me!). Highly recommend if you like SciFi with a bit of soap opera thrown in

I love Star Trek. I did really enjoy it, but felt some of the characters are wandering too far from the original characters. The cgi was amazing, but confusing at times.
How did one of the characters change back to who they are supposed to look like? (trying not to spoiler)

I know what you mean, I didn't understand it either. And what a waste if a gorgeous talented actor!

I have a question to you fans. So I haven't seen the series, only the latest movies and I wonder if I should go see this one. I mean, I somewhat liked the movies, despite me knowing very little about the characters before that, but I don't know ... it doesn't seem as captivating so I am just wondering here ...

I think so binary.

Annabel, if you aren't a die hard fan you'll probably enjoy it more than those of us who are.

I miss the real Spock :(

Spock has too many emotions in the films

I loved this film and am a fan of all the series, except for DS9. It's the best of the reboot films so far. The humour and plot lines involving most of the main characters was really good with the joke about the necklace being my fave. The action sequences were great though o do think the big reveal in the story should have come earlier. I know a lot of trekkies were annoyed about the first reboot changing the whole setup of the story but I think it was needed or they'd have to spend so much time just rehashing things or worrying about sticking events that happened in the original plot lines. This gives them a chance to take every character in a different direction if they want (namely the Uhura/Spock arc which I'm personally loving) while having them still be the characters people know. When I watched the first reboot film, I was a bit stunned by the event that caused this alternate universe but I really enjoyed it as it means I get to see a whole different life for these characters. The actors are great in portraying the characters similar to the originals and Anton Yelchin (RIP) will be missed. I agree though that you don't need to have seen the previous films or series to enjoyor understand this film but I would encourage you watch the previous 2 since they're the ones in the reboot/alternate timeline.

Ohyoubadkitten, I think that character was wearing a special suit in the other scenes which I'm guessing included the helmet in the shape of an alien. Throughout the film I thought it was some sort of mask since you could see his real skin found his eyes and mouth underneath and I figured it wasn't just a bad makeup job but intentional. The suit seemed to give him extra strength compared to when he was out of it and had his own face later in the film. That's my take on it anyway.

Nope, we walked out after half an hour and went home to watch Downton!

We both enjoyed he last one. DP loves a bit of sci-fi but he was falling asleep and realised I'd be pissed off that he'd convinced me to watch this one only to sleep through it!

Just so predictable and unoriginal.

Binary, I love that Madness Star Trek Beyond. It's my alternate theme tune now. Grin

Spock was always my fave character along with Data and 7 of 9. I do love the Spock in the reboot as well. I think the extra emotions he shows are due to him being a younger incarnation than in the telly series. Plus, with what happened in the first reboot film, it changed him so I think his human side got a chance to show. They'll either have him get it under control or let his emotions continue to show a bit. I quite like it, seeing him struggle with his emotions. They did that in the original series a little as well. One of the films did have his dad say Vulcans have even deeper emotions than humans which meant they needed more control.

Mark, you should have stayed. The beginning was slow but it really picked up afterwards.

Urgh. I thought it was crap and loved the first two. Not nearly enough character development. The plot was highly predictable and yet the character decisions didn't make much sense. Lots of random bits that didn't really contribute to the story like Spock/Kirk quitting sadface. Also the mood fluctuated wildly without much reason. The bit with the radio and the enemy ships seemed at odds with the rest of the film. Kirk on a motorcycle was very badly animated and looked like a videogame.

Overall I was just bored which was a shame as I luurved the last one.
