"Safe" "naice" ...Films for 9 year olds ...

My son wants desperately to watch 12 and 12 A but I'm not comfortable necessarily with them. Can you give me some "safe" titles so he knows I'm listening to him and letting him grow up but I don't have to compromise on trying to hold on a tiny bit longer to his innocence (violence and sexual references wise....i' not fussed about a bit of swearing etc)

I could recommend loads of films/series depending what he's into. I love the studio Ghibli films (dh has all of them) spirited away and howl's moving castle are more mature but still pg.

Not transformers with Shia LeBouf in, shocking language and references in that for it being a 12!
My 9yr old loves the Harry Potter series. The last few are all 12's but I've let him watch them for a couple of years now as I'm not entirely sure why they are a 12!

I actually let my DS watch Thor when he was 7 or 8 despite it being PG-13. There was no sexual stuff and the violence was so obviously not real.

I was going to suggest Inkheart but it's only a PG.

My dd loves Harry Potter. I find them a bit scary though. She doesn't. It's weird the things they find scary - I had to ban Scooby Do because of nightmares but Star Wars, Potter, Spirited Away - all fine.

Men in Black 1 and 2 are PG but great fun for kids and adults. 3 not so great. My DS loved it from about 10 yo and we often quote it.

What about the tamer Superheroes like Spiderman?

Thor, guardians of the galaxy, star wars, avengers stuff. All the disney crossover stuff

I would transformers one and two (although check it first for the female decepticon). The last one with Dino bots I would consider if you have a transformers fan.

Under the PG heading Back to the future series, Indiana Jones series, Batman Forever, (Batman and Robin although it's shit) not the Nolan or Burton Batmans

I would consider the Studios Ghiblis as younger more on a par with Disney (or much more older as an adult viewing). DD was more 6 and 7 when she was watching them. I find some of the implied juvenile sexuality a little odd, but I know it is just a part of the genre, that I'm in the minority and it goes over kids heads I think.

Ones i cant remember the ratings off superman (Chris Reeve), batman the animated series (next on our watch list), the latest incarnation of spiderman (I remember us all loving this but I can't really remember whether it mets your suitable criteria)

If you look up the films on IMDb and click on parents guide it will give you a clear description of what language/violence/eroticism is used. May help you find the right films for your DS

I think it depends on the child tbh, there are 12 rated films I won't let him watch, there are a few 15 rated films I have let him watch (Gremlins for one).

How about a Series of Unfortunate Events? Yes it's a children's film but quite dark - I loved films with that gothic feel when I was a kid. Defo no sex/violence either.

Iirc it gives info on why a film has a certain rating.
