I am not a Leonardo de Caprio fan but the hype around this (particularly around it possibly winning him an Oscar) has been so massive that I went to see it this afternoon.

Well- what a pile of poo. That's 156 minutes of my life wasted. It was shocking and far and away the worst thing in it was LdC's performance. At one point I laughed out loud because it was all so ludicrous. Luckily it is a noisy movie so no one could hear me. The only good thing I can say about it is that it was beautifully shot.

Did anyone like it ? If so, tell me what I'm missing.

I thought it was really very good. It felt bleak and hopeless. Which bit made you laugh?

I found it overlong and predictable. However, I loved the cinematography (if that's what it's called) and thought Leo acted brilliantly. Wouldn't watch it again though and neither would DH.

Leo's acting is ABYSMAL.

I laughed when Glass turned up at the fort after umpty-million days trekking through the wilderness and was stripped to the waist revealing that not only had he managed to maintain a very healthy BMI but all the terrible wounds caused by the bear had healed beautifully neatly and flat - almost as if they had been drawn on!

It reminded me of Elizabeth Taylor in the 1939 version of Little Women. She played Amy with more makeup on than the average drag queen.

I watched it last night.

I hope DiCaprio doesn't get his Oscar for this one, he has deserved one for some others though.

I enjoyed the film. I loved the way the bleakness and sheer unremitting hardship of the lifestyle was portrayed and the scenery was truly magnificent. I want to go there. The fight with the bear was terrifying and unrealistic.

I read that the director insisted that only natural lighting be used and I think it shows.

Not Oscar-worthy but certainly very interesting.

sorry, the fight with the bear was realistic

By coincidence when I got home from watching the movie there was an email from my best friend who is travelling around the world with his new husband suggesting I fly out and joint them in Patagonia next month. I might just do it now.

I really enjoyed it. Surprised myself as I thought I would hate it. There's just something really watchable (if that's a word) about Leonardo.

I watched the bear scene through my fingers though. Horrific.

I am glad to see this. I am too but really dislike LdC. Is tom in it much? Or is it really just LdC?

I loved it and thought the performances were fantastic.

Unfortunately though I suspect Leonardo DiCaprio is going the same way as Martin scorcese in that he'll eventually win an Oscar for a not bad performance because it's felt he's owed it rather than for an outstanding performance in which he deserved it.

Leo is in probably 99-100 per cent of the film. I would say Tom Hardy is in maybe 25-30 per cent (perhaps a little less). Don't know if that's much help? Grin

Hmm, 25% is enough tom for me to pay £5 to see Grin i can tolerate LdC for 25% tom.

Tom Hardy was the star of that film

he has the uncanny ability to look totally different in everything that he does. I swear I wouldn't recognise him if I passed him in the street.

Same AF! He was amazing in Legend. Massive crushing on TH here.

I feel that they could cut out about an hour of him crawling injured across the wilderness, and still end up with the same film.

Nice scenery though.

Very good film. LdC maybe deserved an Oscar for The Aviator or Wolf of Wall Street rather than this, but he still acts this brilliantly, so I hope he is rewarded. The cinematography deserves (another) award as well. Will Poulter definitely deserves a credit too.

I hated it .unrelentingly grim . Totally unbelievable that he could have survived those kind of injuries . cinematography and special effects great but I was pretty bored

Report
LaLoose · 21/01/2016 15:41

I thought it was a bit cartoonish. Having survived those injuries (I agree, nooddsocks, just not believable, he then fell off a cliff on a horse AND GOT UP AND DISEMBOWELLED IT. Like another PP, I was also smirking at times (thinking how much the casting director must hate LdC, more than anything else).

However, what I really came on here to post about was the trailer before the movie about Dirty Grandpa. How is that even legal these days? It was like going back to a particularly savage and misogynistic 1970s movie. I know this sounds pearl-clutchy... but as the mother of a young girl I was truly appalled.

I was gripped by it at some bits but I thought the final scenes were a bit of an anti climax and also there was a few bits that he should of definitely died that it made it a bit silly. It wasn't the worst iv seen, but wouldn't watch it again and I'm a fan of both ldc and Tom hardy.
