I'm really surprised Brooklyn isn't up for best picture overall. I've seen Spotlight and Bridge of Spies - Spotlight was brilliant, Bridge of Spies not so much but Brooklyn knocked the socks off both of them imo. Although I'm not really sure Julie Walters deserved the Best Supporting Actress nod, Jane Brennan who played the mum I thought was much better in a smaller role especially in two particular scenes.

I think Rachel McAdams should have got a nod for Spotlight - everyone in it was good but I found her very natural in a less showy part.

As the beautiful Eddie Redmayne is up there, I am content.

Having seen all the Best Actress performances, while I can "get" what people say about Brie Larson, I think Maggie Smith's performance in Lady in the Van was the best, most layered performance of the year.

In terms of Best Actor, Damon and Fassbender were good but far from being exceptional - Redmayne and DiCaprio were both leagues ahead. I'd edge it for DiCaprio, purely on the basis that Redmayne's role is the sort of role that as long as it was competently played, whoever was cast would have been nominated.

I haven't seen The Revenant, The Big Short or Spotlight - very excited for them though.

Didn't care for Brooklyn. Surprised there was no nomination for Jennifer Lawrence in Joy - I know the film's not done massively well but she was brilliant in it.

Really hoping Leo is as amazing as the critics are saying and sweeps everything this awards season - as StillDrSethHazlittMD says, Eddie Redmayne's portrayal, whilst good, was something any competent actor could have pulled off, and the whole thing is a bit Oscar-baity (but it is Tom Hooper I suppose...)

Where are all the other categories MN? Here's a complete list of nominees.

I'm hoping Ex Machina does well. Tough to watch but it is excellent. I'm especially hoping Alex Garland gets British debut.

John Seale absolutely deserves the BAFTA for cinematography. In fact the Mad Max crew should also get the sound, production design, editing and visual effects awards too IMO.

I've seen The revenant, it's a very tough watch, not an enjoyable experience. I can see why it's received lots of nominations but honestly I found it very difficult to sit through and wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they have a very strong constitution!

I haven't seen all of the films.

I agree with Maggir Smith nomination, she was amazing and there was not a hint of the Dowager Duchess in there, which is a way I measure of an actor can act.

And in that vein, Eddie Redmayne just played himself in the Danish Girl, with more simpering, so not for me.

I thought Syria a Love Story was brilliant and I'd like to see the director win in the best newcomer section.

The Revenant is the main contender for film, director and Actor for me. A breathtaking piece of work. Definately hard to watch at times & I felt I'd run a marathon after watching it, but my, a modern day Lawrence of Arabia
