OMG! I went to a preview screening of this (out middle of Jan I think) and I was captivated. The film stayed with me for days afterwards and I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I always think when this happens it's a good indicator that the film is really great.

The acting by Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay just blew me away. It's a harrowing, grim story and they bring it to life in a way that makes you feel you are there with them experiencing every second. This makes it sound unwatchable, it's not, it's a work of art and the best movie I've seen for a long while.

I went to a preview screening today & despite having read the book, found myself holding my breath at certain points. Definitely worth seeing.

Saw this on Friday. Its bleak but uplifting. Hard work and far from comfortable viewing at times but well worth it. Great film.

ooo I was just looking for a thread about this before I started one to ask if anyone had seen it. And was it well done?
I know a lot of us read the book with Mumsnet book club (I was lucky and got a free copy of this one) - and really rated it.
Hoping to see it at the weekend.

I saw this on a recent flight....in fact, I watched it twice, on the way out and on the way back!
It is superb.
The acting is outstanding, can't recommend it enough.

I watched this last night and keep finding myself thinking about it today. The acting was superb and I'll admit to having tears streaming down my cheeks on a number of occasions. I had read the book, as part of the Mumsnet book of the month, so knew the story but still found myself anxious at certain key moments. It is one of the few films of a novel where I haven't been disappointed by the adaption.

What a great film.

Jacob Tremblay is an amazing young actor.

I thought it was amazing and very brave to produce a film where a such young child was in every single scene.

I read that a lot of the film was improvised dialogue. That little boy was an amazing actor for his age.

I saw this yesterday. Hadn't read the book, but the film is superb. Brie Larson delivered a brilliant performance, and the young boy, Jacob Tremblay, was amazing.

What a brilliant, brilliant film. I really hope Brie Larson gets an Oscar for playing her role she most certainly deserves it! I actually knew the whole story, but I still was besides myself with my heart in my throat when the little boy tries to escape! Such a believable film and so beautifully made.

She is very good i think shes one to watch out for.

Only thing i didnt understand though was how the room was just a shed
where abouts where the stairs he seemed to be going down?

Report
bigTillyMint · 27/01/2016 21:35

Each, I didn't see any stairs in the room, only when he went to the grandma's house?

I thought when they heard him press in the code they then heard him coming up/down stairs? When they went back to it I couldn't help but think why didn't you just chuck a pan of boiling water in his face. I know I shouldn't think like that! And how come she never got pregnant again? I loved it but I wanted more. Maybe the book went into more detail?

Very hard going, but brilliant. I cried from about 5 mins in right up to the end, but was crying for different reasons at different points. The part with the dog just killed me. Jacob Tremblay is a star - I've never seen a child actor that good, such a convincing, nuanced performance.

At the end of it all, it's uplifting and beautiful but not an easy watch.

What all the other posts have said - great movie and so well acted. The young boy Jacob Tremblay was so good, not over the top, just utterly believable. Brie Larson was excellent too, as was Joan Allen (grandma) and Tom McCamus (Leo - really good, understated performance, I thought)

I did wonder that they couldn't work out the entry/exit code from the noise the numbers made when pressed, but obviously that wouldn't have made such a great movie! It's absolutely horrific that these things happen in neighbourhoods surrounded by people/houses and it can go unnoticed for many years.

I haven't read the book but will do now. It's nice to hear that it's a good adaptation of the book, so many films don't do stories justice.

I took my sixteen year old daughter to see it. She had read it, and loved it. The film was outstanding! The acting, everything and yes we cried buckets,

From what I saw she didn't get pregnant again as she was still breastfeeding and that's why we stopped when they got out?

Great film indeed. In fact I would say the second half was better than the book. Incredible performances and really well put together.
