So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

I actually liked the lightsabre action. The more minimalist style was closer to the original movies and meant that the focus could be closer, on the emotion of the combatants, rather than further back so they could flip all over the place. I also thought that putting it towards the end made it special; It was something I was getting progressively more excited over as the film went on. I wondered WHO was going to be fighting, as noone was trained as a Jedi apart from Mylo Ren.

Luke was the 'mcguffin' of the piece, so I could understand the very limited appearance - it also means that they can use him as the primary 'father figure' for Rey and Finn in later movies, as there will be no visual competition between Luke and Han.

I think the glimpse of Luke at the end was perfect - but I am just devastated by Han going. I can't believe that they did that when it is really him that has carried the films.

Do you think he is definitely dead? I think so because Leia felt something when he was killed - probably the connection that Ren had killed his father and gone properly to the dark side.

Thought light sabre action was just right - but did think it ridiculous that Finn could handle a light sabre and did think it far fetched that Rey had such strong powers without any training.

I haven't seen it and have no intention of going but I need to ask.

There seems to be a delightful breed of wanker dropping a major spoiler in any and all Youtube comment sections.
Is it true? THE main spoiler. I don't want to say it just in case but it's a BIIIIIG scene.

Ps Rey must surely be Luke's daughter. Although I wondered if she was Leia's.

And I wished there was a better reconciliation between Han and Leia.

No in happy with the glimpse at the end, I just wondered if he felt hard done by after all these years!

I did wonder about the light Sabres and Jedis - I think I was disappointed not to have any Jedis left of I'm honest. And I did feel the loss of Yoda!

I don't think Rey can be Hans' and Leai's - wouldn't it be odd to abandon a daughter and not look for her?

I guessed what was coming but I still sobbed when Han died. I think Harrison Ford has committed to another Indiana Jones film, hasn't he?

I will miss him, but looking forward to the next one. Just enough sabre action for me.

I absolutely LOVED that Rey got the major light sabre battle. I remember even as a child being Hmm at Leia never getting a light sabre or doing any real fighting. She had the force too, why wasn't she getting to be a Jedi? Why was it all about Luke? I think JJ Abrams has triumphed with this movie.

Has he? Grinwill have to be in slo mo poor sod. You could really see the mind over matter in some of the action scenes!

Agree that the reunion wasn't quite as romantic/ fulfilling as I'd wanted.

Anyone else think it wAs based on IV ?

Yes - I thought it was based on IV.

So is Finn the son of Leia and Lando Calrissian?

Report
SouthWestmom · 18/12/2015 17:58

Ooooh I did wonder that, actually thought it might be Lando under the helmet at the beginning.

Anyone else felt Kylo didn't inherit the good looking genes?

Poor Kylo had the look of a spotty youth about him.

I just saw it this afternoon and LOVED it.

Right amount of light sabre action for me. Not a big fan of long fight scenes - find it so boring. Wasn't bored for a second in this film.

I was a little unwilling to love the new characters as no-one can live up to Han, Leia and Luke but I really liked them all. Loved Rey and Finn in all their scenes together.

Think I'll have to go back for a second viewing! Xmas Grin

I thought it was good for the most part although theres no way anything could be as bad as the prequels.

I too was sad at the reunion with Leia and Han and also how she didnt seem that affected by his death, sure she felt it at the time but Chewie, her and Hans lifelong friend just walked past her when he got back and she had some weird sad stare with Rey who is supposed to be a complete stranger to her, then Leia was waving Rey off happily to go find Luke nevermind her son had just brutally murdered his dad, the love of her life.

It was also too convenient that R2D2 just suddenly awoke, the ending just felt a little too contrived and didnt flow as well as the rest of it.

It will be interesting to see where it goes, as a reader of the books in the extended universe, the movie has wiped out years of what was accepted as canon. I knew Disney had already said they werent going to honour the books but its still a shame.

I loved so much about it. A genuinely good film.

I loved that Kylo Ren is so aware that he's not as good a baddy as Darth Vader.

The death, tragic as it was, was right - it fitted the story correctly and it would have been a cop out to have him survive.

It even passed the Bechtel Test.

I don't think so. I reckon she will turn out to be Luke's daughter - probably he is unaware that he fathered anyone but this will be figured out in chapter 8. My reasoning for this is pretty tenuous but is this: Rey kept having the tune that is used as "Luke's Theme" in chp4-6 played over her scenes.

This dies not count as a spoiler for film 8 as it is sheer speculation.

Argh I didn't read the text I quoted properly. I didn't spot you said Finn not Rey.
I have no theories about Finn.

Who was the big baddie/emperor/Voldemort??
Surely Emperor died so who had taken on mantle of leading the Dark Side?
Was Mos the Yoda-type character?

The first thing DH said was 'hmm, kylo ren wasn't good looking enough to be the offspring of Han and Leia'

I thought the uber baddy was called snopes.
But that's probably just an urban myth...
I too think Rey is Luke's daughter.

Wondering if Rey could be a descendent of Obiwan somehow.

No reason for thinking so, except that there isn't a lot of choice for her parentage and I just don't get how Luke would abandon his daughter so casually.

frikadela01 · 18/12/2015 20:31

Rey has got to be a skywalker... It explains how powerful she is with the force.

Although I have a rather out there theory that is highly likely to be bolony that she is a reincarnated jedi we already know (obi wann or qui gon???) Just because of what that little alien with the glasses said about living long enough to see the same eyes over and over again. Out there I know but it would be very interesting.

I really liked it. However, I did think it echoed IV-VI (especially VI) a little bit too much.

Vital message hidden in cute harmless-looking droid that only communicates in bleeps.
Man faces his father in epic showdown.
Planet-sized weapon that can be disabled by X-wings shooting at one tiny spot.
Archvillain who gives orders via hologram.
Small wrinkled ancient one who has great wisdom.

My favourite bit was when DH saw Greg Grunberg and whispered "Ooh, look! It's Dom Joly!"

Well I am just clinging on to the fact that Kathleen Kennedy said that all of the cast (and HF was on the stage) would be back for Episode 8. Still haven't quite got over Han's death. And I just think there needs to be a proper reconciliation between the princess and the smuggler.

Really hope Episode 8 has more about Poe.

I loved the lightsaber battle between Rey and Kylo Ren, it was absolutely perfect. Totally agree with Mephistopheles about the focus being on their emotions and the mental battle between them rather than being done entirely in wide shots to allow for all the ridiculous flipping and stuff they did in the prequels. It was a good length too. The major duel in Revenge of the Sith was so long, at over 10 minutes, that it just ceased to be special.

I love Kylo Ren, I'm as keen to see where his story goes as I am Rey's.

Oh yes the r2 d2 waking up was too convenient. As was little wrinkly one having the light sabre and getting away without saying how. Clearly a sequel in the making.

dS and I (13) both felt there was an eye to the merchandise - bb8 is very appealing to kids and the new characters are younger than the originals when they started (I think)

Yeah, Rey is Luke's daughter but he didn't know he had one. Too proud mum probably to tell him.

I loved it. Thought there was plenty of light sabre action (I don't like light Sabres, think they're boring)

I liked Ray and Finn.

Han. Can't believe he's gone, so gutted SadSadSad
