Has anyone seen The Martian? Is there lots of swearing?

It's a 12A. Would it be totally nuts to take space obsessed 8yr old son to see it? I've read the book and although no sex or violence there is lots of strong language. Wondered if the film is the same?

There is a really useful website where you can check this kind of thing. That sounds sparky but it's not! It's like a parent review site bit I have totally forgotten the name. It rates sex, swearyness, scariness.

Maybe someone else will link?

Snarky not sparky.

Review here looks like some swears

TheSpottedZebra Fri 02-Oct-15 11:30:09

Yes, that's the site!
Can be a bit spoiler but really useful for a detailed breakdown of eg what nudity in what context there is.

That's a really useful website - thanks!

Saw the film last night, very little swearing, a scene where they you'd only know by lip reading. One of the best films I've seen in years.

Thanks everyone, that website is brilliant!

Was just about to say seems like it has too much swearing until you posted northdownmummy. So you don't think too much for an 8yr old?

Rollergirl1 is the book any good?

DH took DS (10) last night but didn't mention the swearyness. He did however say that he couldn't get past it looking like Wadi Rum as we were there last year (I think that spoilt it for him).

OldBeanbagz Fri 02-Oct-15 11:42:07

Forgot to say that DS loved it!

DP really wants to see this so I might suggest a cinema trip at the weekend based on these reviews!

Rollergirl1 Fri 02-Oct-15 11:58:02

OldBean: yes it is very good, and I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi. It is very very descriptive though and I admit I did skip a few bits where it was going on about some piece of space technology. But the suspense is out of this world. And it is absolutely hilarious too. Mark Watney is such a great character and you are heavily invested in his survival right from the start!

Just back from seeing this with DP and we both really enjoyed it! Definitely worth a watch.

Hi all, we're gonna sweep this over to Films in a mo. flowers

timelytess Mon 11-Jan-16 10:41:11

An 8 year old? No. It requires the kind of endurance levels you only reach after 20.

AnyFucker Mon 11-Jan-16 10:41:12

I would let an 8yo watch it

titchy Mon 11-Jan-16 10:50:54

Endurance?! I didn't think it required any endurance at all - it's gripping! And yes book is well worth a read smile

timelytess Mon 11-Jan-16 10:59:48

It wasn't gripping! It was endless...

We took our two who are 8 and 10 We briefed them beforehand about the fact it was a grown up film and there would be some swearing. Its right at the start he is pulling a bit of shrapnel out of his side and says fuck which had them both sitting bolt upright. There is one (maybe two )more swear words later on - shit I think? It's certainly not packed full of bad language. They really enjoyed it.
