The Hitchhiker, directed by 1940s actress Ida Lupino, who was a bit of a pioneer in Hollywood, having set up her own production company.

You probably know it better as its remake, The Hitcher, with Rutger Hauer in the sinister role of the serial killer who menaces the strangers kind enough to give him a ride. Truly suspenseful, and well worth a watch here, free on YouTube.

I'm sure this won't get many replies, but for fans of the genre, it's a real treat.

There's a feminist film studies essay on Lupino and her importance in Film Noir here, for those interested.

Haven't seen this particular film, but I love Ida Lupino, and at one point when I belonged to a film group, wanted to have an award given to her.
