It's on Netflix.

I cried buckets. Absolutely loved it.

How have I missed this so far? And what else do I need to watch?

Haven't seen that for years but remember that it is a goody.
Life is Beautiful. Make sure you replenish your tissue supply....

It's amazing isn't it. I did it during film studies in 1998 and it's been my favourite film ever since. The music just wow but it's heartbreaking but also very funny in places. It made me want to seeSicily too

I loved Alfredo...

Ooh, will check out Il Postino. Will I need more tissues?

I've seen Life Is Beautiful. I adored it, but doubt if I could put myself through it again.

How gorgeous was little Toto? What a great little actor.

Yy to wanting to go to Sicily.

I specifically want to watch a drive in movie while standing on a boat.

The scene at the end when Toto is an adult and watching all the kissing scenes Alfredo had to cut out on the orders of the priest.

I saw it in the 80's. I dislike the director's cut though.

Romauld et Juliette is the only film I have been to where the audience applauded at the end.

Have you watched Jean de Florette? That's pretty sad in places.

Yes, that was a particularly heart-rending bit, RedCheckedTablecloth

Now, what was the director's cut? Because the description of the film on IMDB (have been nerding) mentions a whole section where Toto finds Elena's daughter and hears that Alfredo told her to leave Toto alone.

I wouldn't have liked that, I don't think...

If we're talking non-English tearjerkers ...

Cyrano de Bergerac.

Worth it for the amazing rhyming subtitles (the French dialogue is written in rhyme too).

So I need to find Romauld et Juliette, Il Postino and Jean de Florette.

One of my top 3. I sobbed for around 45 minutes after first viewing, and I am NOT a cryer. Beautiful.

The Hairdresser's Husband also well worth digging out.

Not a yesteryear, but loved 'Mediterraneo'.

BringMeTea - I'm not a crier. I'm not even sure what it was that set me off. Perhaps just that whole thing of going back to your roots, and people getting older...lost love...faded beauty...oh my, I'm setting myself off again...

Cyrano de Bergerac and The Hairdresser's Husband added to list.

Not a TEARJERKER, that should say! (Bloody Kindle.)

Stevienicks' yes. i kinda know it just tapped into some 'deep' stuff. It was a little shocking to me but actually cathartic I think. I am going back many years here.

The Hairdresser's Husband is wonderful. When the Europeans get cinema right, they really nail it.

I loved the Mesrine films. Mostly gangster with a hint of sniffily bits.

Life is Beatiful is the most moving film I have ever seen, but like Stevie writes above, it is unwatchable a second time.

I love Cinema Paradiso so much. I've seen it several times- the last time was 9 years ago before our honeymoon travelling round Sicily. That time I started crying in the first scene where he receives the phone call re Alfredo. I cried pretty solidly after that. Gorgeous music too. One of my all time favourite films.
