The Avengers films. What's the big deal? What am I missing?

I watched the first Avengers film when it was on BBC1 the other night, having heard practically everyone I know tell me what a great films they are and thought it was absolute crap.

Im not a film snob and I'll watch anything, in fact most of my all time favourite films would be considered rubbish by serious film buffs, but this was just lost on me. There didn't seem to be any plot line and it was all big budget special effects, it'll date very quickly. The best thing about it was probably Scarlett Johanson, who looked amazing in it. I'm heterosexual but she could turn me quite easily Blush

But that's it, I don't get it. I like superhero stuff normally, I love the old Superman films with Christopher Reeve, I loved the 90's Superman TV series. I love the old Batman and Robin from the 60's. I even liked the early Spider-Man films.

What am I missing?

I think you're missing that some people like a film, some don't. Its not something that needs explaining.

Try other marvel films like Thor and captain America and things might make more sense avenger wise

Not to worry OP. I fell asleep at the drive-in watching the second one. And according to ds (16) the third one is the most awesome of the lot.

Yawn. I don't get it either, but I suppose its a bit like Marmite really....

You don't have to like it, not everyone does. I agree with tweezer though, try watching the other films - Captain America, Thor, Ironman etc. You will understand more. All those films are interlinked.

I spose it helps if you like big action set-pieces, or if you fancy one of the actors. I'm a no for both, so it's not my kind of film.

I prefer X men films to the Avengers. The only decent Avenger is Iron Man in my opinion and they already make standalone films about him.

The xmen films are so much better i prefer them to

murphys - is your DS the Doctor? The third Avengers film isn't out until 2018! That's some time-travelling skills he's got there.

I agree with Winter - did I miss the memo that said we all had to like every film ever made? Confused

I liked the first one until the wormhole stuff, but I didn't like the new characters in the second one, it was far too noisy and in your face right from the beginning and they've ditched the best character - Loki. I know he died (again) in Thor 2 but he's a God isn't he, do they die?

Loki isn't dead though, did he not take over Odin's place? He's a wee scamp

Ahem [blush). So it was the first one that i fell asleep through, and the 2nd one that ds is raving about. Grin. I think it might be clear from just my first post that I am not the biggest Avenger fan Grin

And anyway, I was all annoyed when they filmed the 2nd one as they filmed parts of it here in Jhb. The streets were closed and those that were open become one bloody ways.... Really, I know its a shit hot motion picture filming, but where it was filmed, is quite a big business area.... Hence lots of unhappy business people late for meetings....

Well I like the Avengers films but I don't love them. I'm much more of an x men fan and collected the comics for a good 15 years. I've only stopped now because I don't have the space here to store them. I was never a massive fan of the avengers comic book although I have read quite a few. I always preferred the x men as they had more of a human touch, with personal problems and everyone mistrusting them etc. All the X films bar the horrendous X3 beat the marvel cinematic universe hands down imo.
The Avengers films aren't that great.
Side note I like Batman but absolutely hate all the films. The dark knight rises was such a lot of bat balls with massive, unexplainable plot holes.
Hmm Also thought heath ledgers infamous joker in the dark knight was overrated as well.

I didn't enjoy the first one as it was just random superheroes doing random saving the earth, BUT I ghen watched the Thor, captain America and iron man films and loved them all, thus making more sense when they all gang up together.

You are also missing the legend that is Joss Whedon's writing and directing skills, of course...

I really enjoyed the first Avengers film and yes it helped that I'd watched the other movies on the characters first. Tom Hiddleston as Loki is just fabulous and I know he has said in interviews that he has a lot of fun playing him.

The new Avengers though I wasn't so fussed on. Felt long, some of the big CGI sequences just didn't work for me and some of the side plots were frankly tedious. Loved the humour though. Not helped by a dodgy 3D system in the Sky Superscreen at the O2 and the sound system ramped to 11.

Got to wait a year now for Captain America 3 then its 2017 for Thor 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Loads of other Marvel stuff out this year though which should be good.

You do need to see all the films and be prepared to engage with the whole mythos... Apart from that the main things for me are the one-liners and the eye candy - finally the producers are giving us women something to lust over!

I really liked Age of Ultron, I thought having James Spader voice Ultron was a master stroke, that man can do sociopath with the power of his voice alone.

I do hope we get Loki back at some point though. On the whole the X-Men films are better plot-wise, but I enjoy both.

I'd only been vaguely aware of the marvel films before DH dragged me to the pictures to watch the first Avengers. And I feckin' loved it. I was amazed (after sitting through the recent Batman films) how funny it was. Then I promptly ordered all the back catalogue from Amazon.

I think, as PP's have said, you either like it or you don't. Not everyone has the same taste. I didn't like Breaking Bad, which everyone raves about. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with me.

I was brought up on a variety of Marvel comics and love X Men and the Avengers. And Spider-man. What I liked best about the Avengers films was that they were really true in spirit to the comics. And yes, the people in it are all very pretty, or ugly in a fascinating sort of way, which doesn't hurt.
