Not sure she's actually seen many (apart from the Star Trek reboots) ... what would be your top picks for this age group please?

Alien and Alien 2. Space and a kick arse female lead.

I think Alien might be too scary. I was a student when the first one came out and didn't like the sound of it then and still don't TBH! But thanks for the suggestion - I'm sure they're good films.

She may like the rebooted TV series of Battlestar Galactica

Not seen that - DH and I probably would like it even if she didn't. Grin

Battlestar Galactica is great, I agree.

Also Serenity (film) and Firefly (series) - watch the series first.

I've just finished Fringe - it went a bit post apocalyptic at the end and the science is absolutely ridiculous, but good story.

A very old one, I've always liked Silent Running.

Bet she'd love Serenity and Gattaca. Not scary and very accessible.

YY to Blade Runner and Inception.

I love Tarkovsky's original Russian version of Solaris - really strong messages about the meaning of life and science. It is quite long, though!

INeedSomeHelp · 13/12/2013 15:28

Tron - does that count as science fiction? It will probably seem very dated to a 14 year old now.

BaaHumbug · 13/12/2013 15:34

Is she too old for Flight of the Navigator?

Probably not - I'm 47 and still not too old for it. Grin

Another one for Gattaca.

Does she want thoughtful (along the lines of Moon) or blockbuster (Independence Day)?

Not sure TBH. Up till now I'd have said she would prefer something with a bit of humour (some sci-fi can be awfully up itself dolorous, can't it?) and not too dystopian/pessimistic (though of course she loves Hunger Games so maybe that's my taste not hers now).

Thanks

Thanks for all these suggestions - there's quite a few I've not seen. And some I've not seen for a long time - the Midwich Cuckoos film (Village of the Damned) is even older than I am - probably the first 'sci fi' film I ever saw! Grin
