Quite enjoyed the film, typical Ang Lee stuff, but am i the only person who gets annoyed that EVERY time young children are shown, they are screaming hysterically? IME babies don't cry ALL the time. Why do male film makers think they do?

Maybe it's a factor in the falling birth rate in the Western (cinema watching) world Grin

Finally saw this last week and found it completely heartwrenching. Very beautiful, very subtle, very compelling. Absolutely deserved all the plaudits (doesn't happen often!). Just wondered, though, why Jake Gyllenhaal wasn't up for best actor too? He was superb.

I watched it last night and have to say it was quite good but not as good as I thought it would be. I think I'm better off watching the film before I read any recommendations or reviews. I expected too much. Had a job understanding what they were saying to each other half the time. They seemed to be mumbling and had really strong accents.
Deffo worth a watch though.

i also struggled to understand what they were saying - and i'm quite used to american accents! i think it was something to do with how the sound was recorded. Lee likes to make things realistic, but we had to turn the sound up. a good film, but not great! the only time the sound was crystal clear, was the babies crying - far louder than the people speaking.

I thought it was just me with the sound thing as I a slightly deaf in one ear.

Did you find yourself been quite happy to be part of a threesome girls? I did What gorgeous men, wouldn't mind be sandwiched in the middle.

Well I've watched it today because DP won't watch it with me (says its not his kind of film) and I really wanted to watch it as I was quite curious......its been really good so far and haven't seen the end yet as had to break off to make my lunch.

Definitely one for the women though....imo

oh god i watched this quite recently with a friend. Neither of us could understand what they were saying...it was so muffled all the time!. Hated it ...didn't get why people love it at all.

I watched this and found it quite slow and boring, carried on watching it thinking it would get better but it never did.

I was really looking forward to seeing it and once I did I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. I thought it was pretty dreary - and the sound quality was dreadful: I needed subtitles.

Loathed it - put dp loved it. I only know 3 other people who've seen it and they all hated it too.

It does look gorgeous though - perhaps it should've been a series of paintings of beautiful scenery instead of a boring (and inaudible) film?!

That should say "but" not "put" of course.

I'm with marthamoo, troutpout, jenkel, and janeite .. I was disappointed not to get to see this at the cinema, and was really looking forward to watching it on DVD. And it was a complete anticlimax - I am very easily moved to tears and emotion, and this film left me completely cold. I don't get what all the fuss was about at all.

I'm American. I'm from the South.

But that Jake fella was mumbling so much I couldn't understand a goddamn thing he was saying.

Cool film but my dh is a royal marine and keeps on going on about it calling it "Bare back Mountain" and generally being excessively crude. Anyone else had this reaction?

No, I was too busy turning up the volume trying to make sense of all that mumbling.

And Michelle Williams' character drove me postal!

Those big ol' ducky lips.

I wanted to slap her.

I thought the whole thing was overrated.

I know what you mean with the mumbling but you can still get the general idea behind it all!!!! Thought it was a good film but wouldn't bother watching again. Saw Taledega Nights which is awesome!!!!!!!!

expatinscotland · 06/10/2006 21:43

I hated it.

It did make me yearn for the High Country, though.

But em, I could watch a video of that w/o having to watch that pants film again.
