Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I've just been to the cinema to see this and to my surprise enjoyed it as I'm not a fan of the HP films preferring the books.

We watched it in 3D and at times it was amazing, I would go so far as to say it's the best film I've seen in the 3D format.

I took my 6 year old DS and we bumped into a classmate of the same age in the cinema and the boys did not find it scary or sad at all - in fact the part of the film that distressed them both the most was "the kiss" which they both gave a very French "beurk". So if anyone who has younger children was considering but was concerned I'd say go for it.

I can't comment on the language because we watched it in French but I was surprised by how many "merdes" were being flung about so maybe there is some bad language in the English version.

I saw it today as well, I am in the Middle East.

Brilliant, excellent, fabulous, everything I would have wished for. Cried a lot though. A fine ending.

The only thing that spoiled it was the woman who thought it acceptable to answer her phone and conduct a full scale conversation throughout the last twenty minutes. Apparently this is common here .

Did you people watch the same film?

I was so disappointed I've hardly ever seen such a poorly plotted film, with zero character development.

It was all Harry; Ron and Hermione hardly get to say 2 words! When they kiss at the wrong moment and Harry's not even there and there's no dialogue, they just do it and that's it.

The liberties taken with the story line were massive I can't believe Rowling had anything to do with it.

Dh saw part of it yesterday when he was setting it up( projectionist). He's working on it today so will get some report tonight. He said the first showing was all adults!

I went and saw the double bill showing - part one and two last night with my 18 year old daughter. We loved lots of it , felt they had moved too far from the book in a couple of places and both cried. End of an era for me as she's grown up with HP.

I learnt from the first film to detach it from the book, and for that aspect can enjoy the books and films for different reasons IYKWIM. [hsmile]

Yes it does take big steps away from the book but it stands up well. I really enjoyed.

I enjoyed it better than part 1. Two horcruxes destroyed within the first hour, and it was building to a conclusion and a big finale, so it didn't drag as much as part 1.

As you'd expect, so much of it is rushed. The Snape storyline in particular was dealt with in about five minutes. But the effects were good and DS (9) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Blubbed a lot, but in the book I really cried during the very last chapter, but in the film I found it too rushed and not very touching.

I found the pensieve bit very emotive - but agree that the end was not as emotional as in the book.

Just back. Loved it. Cried A LOT at the pensieve bit. Nice touches of humour amongst the chaos. Alan Rickman bloody brilliant.

Yes, it took some liberties and the kiss was wrong but I do understand why they moved it.

Some of the battle effects were incredible - LOVED the McGonagall army! In fact, loved Maggie Smith totally. Neville was the star of the show though.

Remus why do you think they moved the kiss? I mean I was glad we got to see Ron and Hermione off doing something because in the book it is a bit pathetic how they just come back from the chamber of secrets horcrux dispatched and that's that.

But the best bit about R &H's kiss is the line about the house elves then the kiss then Harry saying 'Now?' That's the whole point.

Yes re the house elves and that then justifies most of the earlier SPEW stuff which seemed so long and random at the time BUT they already had a zillion characters running around and they'd already taken the liberty of having Ron speak Parseltongue (which I've never felt rang quite true in the book either) onstage rather than offstage, so it worked to see them snog after doing something clever together, as much as it would have worked to see them snog then be surrounded by fork-wielding elves. BUT it is better in the book, of course - because it's Hermione finally losing all of her inhibitions at Ron's moment of empathy at the seeming to be end of everything! I did like their little giggle afterwards.

I do think that Rickman stole the show, despite how little he was on screen.

I thought the shots of Rickman in front of the cot were incredible - superlative acting. Sob. :(

I didn't think they made enough of the Molly moment - they could have drawn it out more and played with them circling each other a bit more. I also thought that Fred's death was made too little of. Loved the bit where Remus and Tonks reach for each other's hands though.

Watched Part 1 last night and Part 2 earlier this evening and enjoyed them a lot (apart from Italian teenagers behind me this evening who seemed to feel that talking through the film was a good idea [hangry].

Need to reread the book now so I can join in properly with the "but it wasn't like that in the book" [hgrin]

I thought it was very good and not too far from the book.

Just got back. Loved it. I am such a pain when it comes to films wandering too far from the book and was prepared to be disappointed in places but found once I was there and watching I didn't actually care.
Loved Prof. Mcgonagall. Maggie Smith wonderful as always. Neville was a star in his own right. To be honest after all the action I would have thought they might have made more of the final showdown. It seemed small and over quickly.
Comedy came in the form of a woman, who in the quiet not at the end just before the coda, was heard very loudly sobbing her heart out. At which point the entire auditorium erupted in howls of laughter!

For the first time, I decided not to reread the book (or at least in this case half a book) before watching the film because otherwise I spend too much time saying "it wasn't like that in the book". I was still aware of differences of course as I have read the books several times but not as much as usual and as a result I enjoyed the film more.

I saw it on Wednesday (Belgium) with the dcs. Dd and I are going back with friends tomorrow!

I also deliberately avoided the trailers as I've also felt while watching the previous films that I'd already seen the best bits! I'm glad I did as I've since watched the trailers and a lot of the good special effects are in there.

I would have liked to have seen hp give kreacher the fake locket and the house elves come to their aid. I also agree with others that not enough was made of some of the fighting scenes.

That said, I really enjoyed it. My favourite bit was definitely the Snape memory scene. Was definitely the saddest bit too!
