Taking 6 year old to see Transformers film - 12A rating

Well should I? Can I? Will the cinema even let us in?

Kids are desperate to see it.

Is there another one out? Shees
I wouldn't take a 6yo, they are fairly violent ime.

AMumInScotland Mon 11-Jul-11 11:13:18

The cinema will let you - it's up to you as the adult accompanying the children to decide if you think it is suitable for them or not.

But 12A films are not considered suitable for under 12s, usually for pretty compelling reasons IMHO. This link tells you why this particular film has been made a 12A - have a look and decide if you are happy about taking a 6yo to it or not.

fanjobanjowanjo Mon 11-Jul-11 11:13:43

The cinema will let you in - 12A means any under 12s have to be with an adult so it's at your discretion whether they see it or not. (And your fault if they are traumatised!)

Sidge Mon 11-Jul-11 11:13:55

6????

Holy crap, I wouldn't take a 6 year old to see Transformers. They're quite violent aren't they? But then I'm pretty old fashioned regarding what I let my children watch.

chicletteeth Mon 11-Jul-11 11:16:00

What is with people ignoring the ratings given to films?
There was somebody yesterday who wanted to take her DD to see the new Harry Potter?

Violent, much? Both films certainly are.

It annoys me that the marketing for these films is aimed at children - TV adverts, toys etc. - but then the films are unsuitable.

I won't be taking my 6 year old. I told him 12A means he isn't allowed until he is 12. I know that's not quite true, but he doesn't......

spookshowangel Mon 11-Jul-11 11:18:01

i went and saw it at the weekend... i wouldnt personally its a good fun film but there is a lot of destruction and human death in it. no blood obviously but people do get disintegrated and there are prob quite a few bits that would be very scary for a 6 year old.

I wouldn't do it. Just tell him that he's too young.

Amateurish Mon 11-Jul-11 11:22:07

IIRC 12A allows under 12s with an adult, but strictly no under 8s.

Silverlace Mon 11-Jul-11 11:22:29

YABU

I wouldn't let my 6 year old see it. Even if the film doesn't bother them at the time the images will live on in their imaginations and could come out as nightmares and violent and inappropriate play.

Don't spoil their innocence!

notso Mon 11-Jul-11 11:26:10

EndoplasmicReticulum agree totally. Transformers are for little kids so why not make a film for little kids.
OP watch it yourself first and then decide. DS is 6 and has seen a 12 Harry Potter, but in my defence we borrowed the DVD and it was in the wrong box.
Have been debating about letting 11yo DD watch the Twilight films.

niceguy2 Mon 11-Jul-11 11:26:21

I've seen the film and to be honest I wouldn't take a 6 year old. Not because of the violence but because:

a) It's quite a long film to expect a 6yr old to sit through
b) It's pretty shit

And that's coming from a fan of most things sci-fi. On the plus side, the bird in it is smoking hot but again, suspect that would be lost on a 6yr old.

share Mon 11-Jul-11 11:28:45

YABU imo - it's only a film.
If you expose a 6 year old to such a film where do you stop? What will they have to look forward to when they are older?

fanjobanjowanjo Mon 11-Jul-11 11:29:36

"It annoys me that the marketing for these films is aimed at children - TV adverts, toys etc. - but then the films are unsuitable. "

That's why they brought in the 12A rating, instead of addressing the marketing problem as they should. (Greedy fat cats).

It started with the Spiderman films. (Worked at cinema at time and experienced many enraged parents with your argument above and couldn't let them in to see it so they brought in 12A)

AMumInScotland that's a really good link.

Saw this film yesterday. Twas fab!

I went with DS1 (almost 10), Dnephew1 (11) ans DNephew2 (7) and sis: DN2 was fine with it. However, I did not take DS2 (6) as he would have been terrified.

Depends on the child, I suppose.

superjobeespecs Mon 11-Jul-11 11:34:49

DD watched the first one with me a milion times since its came out <i used to watch it like 3 times ad ay even just have it on in the background i loved it so much blush> i think she was 3 at the time well 3 and a half .. grin

she doesnt give a monkeys stuff about the second one prob becasue i dont its bloody boring but we will watch the third one and she's 6 now.

she doesnt scare easily tho so it just depends on if your DC would get a fleg?

4madboys Mon 11-Jul-11 11:34:55

well my 11 yr old, just 9yr old and 6 yr old boys went to see it last week, it was a bday treat for ds2' 9th birthday, they have seen the other transformer films, love the toys and were desperate to see it. my 6 yr old was fine, not scared and all three boys thoroughly enjoyed it, my dp thought it was crap.

dp said the main issue for him was the swearing in it, but the boys know not to swear, and tbh they hear the same and worse in the school playground [shrug]

they are also very aware that its NOT real, its make believe and that violence is not nice. tbh i would rather they saw this than eastenders or any other crappy soap on tv.

SomekindofSpanish Mon 11-Jul-11 11:35:26

Oh yeah, and there is quite a bit of swearing...
And sexism hmm

TheFalcon Mon 11-Jul-11 11:53:43

How is there sexism in it? Are there lady transformers?

SardineQueen Mon 11-Jul-11 12:05:27

If there weren't any "lady" transformers (hmm @ that in itself) it would be pretty sexist.

Fortunately there are plenty of female transformers. Phew!

seeker Mon 11-Jul-11 12:12:50

watch this and then decide.

itisnearlysummer Mon 11-Jul-11 12:14:24

the sexism, ime, relates to the teenage girls wandering around in knickers and cropped wet t shirts.

I don't really think it's appropriate for 12 yos tbh. not sure why they've got 12a ratings!

oh yeah and explicit references to masturbation, from what i recall...
