Am sure I have ADHD, should I get tested, do adults take ritalin?

Hi, ds was dx with ADHD, he was prescribed ritalin, and he has much improved.

I have since been reading a lot about ADHD and more specifically ADHD in adults and am 100% sure I have it. Every point was like reading a description of me, it was uncanny. I am totally sure. I actually feel happy and relieved in a way, because I have always felt something wasn't quite right about me and now I'm sure I know why.

So I am wondering, do I go through the formal process of official dx for myself?

I know I shouldn't have, but I tried ds ritalin a couple of times and I felt so wonderful and have tackled many of the jobs I have put off and put off.I know self dx is not recommended, but it all seems so exactly right. I'm not sure where to go from here. There seems to be a lot of help out there for kids, but not for adults, I phoned yesterday for appt - next one available is in October. Now not even sure if I should go through with it?

There is less pressure on diagnosing adults as for kids there is their education to consider. A lot of the diagnosing is done in conjunction with edpsychs. But if ritalin helps you so much you owe it to yourself to speak to your GP about it. With or without diagnosis ask if they will give you a trial of ritalin. And take that appointment.

thanks wist. I wonder if a gp could or would give me a trial run of ritalin though?

I am sure you're right re going ahead with the testing, it's just it's so long to wait and I worry about the stigma attached. I thought about just doing self help based on strategies I've read for coping with the disorganisation and chaos etc, but then I did the try with ritalin, and the difference it made to my motivation, lack of procrastination, focus etc was astonishing.
