Alternatives to beta blockers/medised??!!

I am a recently single parent but ever since DD was born i have struggled with anxiety and sad feelings in the evenings and night. I am trying to get counselling at the moment as i think its about time i dealt with some of my issues over upset about DD (she has quite complex medical needs). Anyway, my point is, I am out of beta blockers and the dr seems intent on getting me on prozac which i don't want partly cos i'm scared i'll gain weight but also cos i'm generally happy and relaxed enough in the day its just the nights i'm bad. So don't want anything that has to be prescribed but has anyone used kalms or anything similar? Ibtake DD's medised most nights atm cos i like the feeling that i know i will sleep. Thing is, it gives a bit of a hangover!

Hi used2bethin. Well, I personally feel that regular taking of medised is likely to make things worse. I do know that some prescribed tablets can help but they only mask the problem rather than deal with it. Good for you.... really good for you to get some counselling. It can be so so helpful. Where you can be angry, hurt, histerical etc without being judged. Ive had it - it helps beyond belief. Im my personal expereince anything like Prozac or tranquilisers to encourage sleep just makes the next day harder to deal with and feeling that sleepy when you have taken it makes all the feelings so so much worse. I used to use Tranqs ro encourage me to cry and get the emotions out, again I wouldnt recommend this. You need support (you will find that here is crate loads) and counselling. St Johns wort is a natural mood balancer if you want to give that a go. HIgh doses of Vitamin B will help with depression and depleted energy levels.
You sound like a very strong person - well done x

Thanks yes I think counselling will help. Medised probably isn't the best I agree... used to take cough medicine as a teenager, then discovered codiene and valium due to a bad neck! Again its the hangover thing! Been thinking about st johns wort for a while... The vit B thing is interesting too, I am vegetarian so I wonder if I don't get enough of it.

aromatherapy stuff? rescue remedy? worth a go, can't see they would do any harm apart from waste of money if they don't do much for oyu.

yes i am going to get some tomorrow, one of the things that came up on my google search was a link to someone on a health site taking it, she said she somtimes takes 50mg and sometimes takes 100mg depending on how she feels....

i am going to speak to the assistants in h&b and see what they say..

when on the h&b site it does come up under weight loss items... but it seems to be great for anxiety etc aswell,

i really hope it works, got to be better than taking medised...

You could try valerian. You can buy it in tincture form or get the dry root and boil it up to make tea. Smells awful but makes you sleep well!

hi ....

well i got some!!!!

the lady in shop told me to take the tablet at night time as it has a calming affect, it seems to be a bit of a wonder thing as it seems to help with so many things- i saw a book about it on amazon!! but you dont seem to hear about it although i am sure i read something about it a few years ago,,

fingers crossed it is the wonder pill for me and solves all my problems (think i may be hoping far to much)

oh wow have u taken it then? I didnt get there in the end, wish i did tho, XP being a pain and could do with a little something!

i think my dad gave me valerian something once when i got dumped when young and was upset... might be worth a try. MUST try and make it to hand b tomorrow!

hi... i am going to take one on fri nite as didnt want to risk any side effects at work!!

Report
used2bthin · 30/06/2007 16:56

SW did u try it? I bought some today, they gave me a print off about it though which seems to say it was effective when people took 300mg but these are 50mg and it says take 1-2 a day. Worth a try though I'll be trying one tonight. PS am so silly, I wondered how you knew I'd be interested in the appetite surpressing qualities-its in the name-doh!

hi...
i have been taking since thurs 1 a night,(i know i said fri but i couldnt wait!!)

i do feel less hungry today,

i think it would be to expensive for me to take more than one a night....

did the leaflet same about appetite? as on my pack it says nothing.....

i wonder if they work out cheaper on ebay?

best of luck

Report
used2bthin · 30/06/2007 17:46

Thats what i was thinking, and also it says on the pack not to take more than two. This was on the handout the shop manager gave me(they had a computer thing in the shop u could look anything up on ...in a controlled trial 300mg per day was shown to be effective in depression although much of the research was uncontrolled...appetite reduction and weight loss occured with amounts of 600-900mg daily(averaging 11pounds in 12 weeks_)

Still, it says 100mg was enough for insomnia. With higher doses there are side effects so i'll just be taking the one too. It might work anyway, at least to get me out of my panic and feeling rubbish then binge eating in the evenings!!

Hi when i came off beta blockers for anxiety and palpatations i had counselling and i used to go for reflexology it really helped and i used relaxation techniques in the evenings

Report
used2bthin · 30/06/2007 21:19

Thanks, was it hard coming off them? I've got one left but don't want to take it unless in emergency as i like knowing its there! May get some more but am trying this 5Htp so fingers x! Reflexology sounds nice. Am trying to access counselling through DD's hospital team or something similar atm, very hopeful that just getting things straight in my head will help.
