Really struggling to get through the minutes

Don’t know why posting really.

I’ve always been anxious and felt like I’m going to fail at work. Am back from mat leave in a challenging high profile job. Manager left just after I arrived and new big boss above that manager just started. Seems not very sympathetic.

Work is loading up. Lots of problems and things to achieve that I don’t know how to do. Am frozen and overwhelmed, I’m not sleeping or eating. So anxious and down. I’ve never had to resign before but I think I might have to. Being signed off will push the problem down the road - the job is the source.

But then we’ll struggle for money. And will I just spiral down?

With my kids at parents in law. So anxious and can’t do anything. Just reading and being a terrible parent. Have no idea what’s going to happen to me.

Hi Binky, I’m sorry you’re feeling so low. What I would suggest is that you take your time to reflect and don’t make any rash decisions. I struggle with depression and anxiety too and when I went back to work recently after maternity leave to a new job I was feeling so overwhelmed that I quit. I can honestly say it felt great to have pressure off however it was very short term relief as we are now in financial difficulties as a result and my depression has also worsened. Take your time before deciding anything and maybe consider going to see your GP for some treatment. If it helps any I’ve always felt like I’ve been on the edge of failure at work (professional job) like it was only a matter time before it happened. Please be kind to yourself and give yourself some time to think and maybe discuss with your partner or a close trusted friend, they can often give you some perspective. Big hug

Thank you for your response. It was very kind.

I know I can’t stay in this particular job but my work set up means that other jobs are available and there are other options. But I can’t carry on, so not sure how to sort a move out. I might drop down a bit.

I always feel on the edge of failure too. I hope it worked out for you?

Sorry, I see you did update. Are you looking to do something else. I hope you’re ok - it will work out in the end

It’s great that there are other options at work. There’s no shame in taking a step back or a sideways move. If you don’t feel you can talk to your new boss about it maybe you could consider approaching HR for a confidential chat (we can be quite nice smile. You don’t have to decide anything straight away. I’m unemployed now so am considering taking a career step back myself and applying for more junior roles. To take the pressure off, it doesn’t have to be forever, maybe just while I’m sorting myself out. Returning from mat leave is always a difficult time, juggling new responsibilities and emotions about returning. Be gentle with yourself and explore your options when you feel strong enough
