How to stop blocking my thoughts

I've been suffering with stress and anxiety, currently off work sick. It occurred to me last night that I have been blocking all thoughts in my head for the last few years. I constantly read, iPad etc to stop thinking about stuff.

It all started after some family/health issues which were difficult to deal with, I just got my head down and got on with day to day stuff. Now I realise that I have never dealt with any of my worries, I feel like a tight coiled spring.

How can I break this habit and learn better coping methods? Do I need counselling? Can I fix this myself and where do I start?

I guess I've started by realising the problem, but I don't know what to do next. Has anyone any idea?

Distraction only lasts for so long. You probably need to address the issues you're trying to avoid.
Can you ask your GP to be referred for counselling? In some areas you can self refer so it could be worth checking.
In the meantime it sounds like you've got some good ideas of how to distract yourself. Art based things are good too as you have to focus. Eg colouring? Or painting?
