Dealing with emetophobia after vomiting - will I have another crisis?

In case you are not familiar with the term, emetophobia = fear of vomiting.

This night, I woke up abruptly twice to be sick. I completely freaked out: sent relative to buy me medication at a drugstore (at three in the morning), my thoughts keep going back to suicide (a recurring theme) because I cannot possibly deal with this my entire life. Any stomatch movement scares me and despise being hungry, I refuse to eat.

Background: I come from a family that suffers from anxiety and depression, both of which I was diagnosed with. I am medicated since I was 8. While there have been two occasions in the past where I was sick and was fine, in 2012 things went downhill. Became too thin due to refusing to eat, could not study because it wasn't "safe" and spent hours locked in my bathroom. Not to mention the medication abuse I did, chucking myself full of motion sickness pills so I would not vomit.

I am afraid this is going to happen again. How do I cope?

See a Doctor as soon as you can.

I sympathise a lot with much of this as I suffer with this phobia too. Go to your GP and see if you can see a therapist. In the meantime you coped through last night which is amazing. Just because it's got worse before it doesn't mean it'll get worse again like before. Think of ways to help your anxiety whilst you're waiting for help (eg meditations/exercise etc). Anything that will help you get through each day before you can see someone.

Thank you, Oreo and Roastie. Once the scare was over, I fell back into my normal, sort of stable self. Wednesdays are therapy days, and it was quite comforting talking to mine (especially because she is also a doctor, so any questions I had were answered).

It will most likely be fine; I am still dizzy but I believe it is more psychological than pysical. The one change I have noticed seems to be hyperattention: anything that resembles, sounds or smells like vomit makes my heart beat faster, even things that are not related at all such as my floor above neighbours moving their furniture around late at night.

I think that the reaction of being hyper aware is natural given what happened and your phobia and will get better over time as things settle down. Xx
