Mental health

Struggling...

Not sure where to start or what I even want from this...

I've struggled with my mental health since I was about 11, mostly health anxiety and general anxiety. I get obsessed with dying and convince myself I have a terminal illness.

For the past 2 years I was mostly calm and rational but since my son was born things have gone down hill. It started with severe anxiety about my son and 10 months later now about myself again. I have resigned myself to the fact I'll never see him grow up and I don't know why I feel like this.

Has anyone been in the same position? What can I do? I have never seen a doctor about this properly. I went to the GP when I was 12 and 18 and was given Prozac but it didn't help

I think a bit of catastophising is not unusual when you've just had a baby - it's natural to feel vulnerable yourself, and to feel protective about your baby's vulnerability - but whether you need to do anything depends on how intrusive and how prevalent these irrational thoughts are.

If you feel you're in a loop that has an impact on how you live your life, or it's really getting you down, then I think, judging by your last paragraph, you know what you can do - see your GP. You might be worried/dismissive because Prozac didn't help you before, but there are other options, and I feel a bit sad for you that you didn't have better help before - like, for example, a doctor who said to you 'come back and see me if this doesn't help.'

See your GP, gunting. It can't do any harm, and who knows, it might help a lot. Good luck.
