Moving house anxiety re furniture removal

I have issues with dirt. I go through phases, and sometimes it is bordering on extreme, other times I think fairly 'normal' but I think I am always just more aware of it than people around me. We're planning to move flat, and I'm starting to stress out about the removal van - we will need movers, we have a lot of stuff (even with all the stuff in storage) and we can't physically do it in the time. But I can't get my head round the fact that my furniture and mattresses are going to be carried down our tenement stair (not the cleanest) and put in a van. The guy who has just been round to do our first quote has talked about blanket wrapping furniture, but I don't know if I can deal with blankets that have been on the floor of a removal van being wrapped round my furniture. I will want to dettox everything and I don't know if the wood is going to cope with it.

How do people deal with this? how much covering up of stuff can I get away with? My husband is patient with me but I am aware he thinks a lot of the stuff I do regarding washing and cleaning is way beyond what he thinks is needed.

I just want to work out a way to get through this.

Hello OP, no one else has responded so I'm going to reply so you know you're being listened to. I'm not entirely sure how I can help though, but I can make a few suggestions.

First of all I think you should work out what kind of levels of wrapping would make you feel OK. For example, if you bought some cheap bed sheets and used them to wrap your furniture, would you be happy for the removal van blankets to go on top of that? So your furniture doesn't touch them? Can you put fitted sheets on both sides of your mattress that again you can take off and only use for moving? Can you put your sofa cushions in vacuum bags? Sounds like you need to agree with yourself what will be OK and then see if you can do it. But be reasonable with yourself! Can you 'make a deal' with yourself over what you think is 'acceptable' to you? Can you go to a charity shop and buy old curtains and blankets which you could wash and then use for wrapping the furniture, and then wash and donate back afterwards, rather than using the removal man's?

For the future though, it would be worth perhaps after the house move, see if you can get some help with this issue. It's obviously making you very anxious and someone who knows properly how to deal with it might be able to help you take a more relaxed view. Perhaps your DH would support you in doing this, especially if he's aware that this stresses you out.

Don't dettox your furniture. It won't thank you. Good luck with the move!

Ok, you do need to get help with this, but in the interim you can buy rolls of thick plastic sheeting to wrap furniture in. Or clear plastic bin bags for smaller items such as cushions. You can also buy plastic mattress bags. You can even buy plastic sofa covers.

Thanks - we are going to get plastic mattress covers and have worked out the sofa needs to come apart anyway so covers and cushions will be packed. Wardrobes also are not going to fit through the door in one piece. My chest of drawers I will wrap - old sheets are a good top.

I know it is not good - generally I work round it and my tolerances do vary, but the stress of moving is making he very twitchy. I've been off ADs for a whole but maybe need to go back to dr.
