A good friend of mine is suffering work related stress and depression. He is comming in for bullying from management. Even though he has spoken to HR his employer is not listening.

He is scared to take time off with depression.

Has anyone any experience of similar situations and dealing with the HR side?

I think all you can do is to keep a running record of all the instances of bullying, with date and time and exact nature of what happened. When you say management, do you mean a member of the management team, or more than one? HR will almost always side with management as they are part of the same company. Mental illness is now part of the Disability Discrimination Act and it is unlawful to discriminate against someone because of their mental health.

Your friend should put their mental health first and seriously consider leaving this job.
Fighting bullying can take a very heavy toll.
In my experience most organisations will back bullying managers and continue to promote them as they are seen as strong managers who get results Shock. It's a nightmare.
