I have been struggling with anxiety and depression. I am on antidepressants abd have pericyazine for when I get really anxious. But tonight i had a really strong thought that everyone would be better off without me. I'm not going to do anything but am scared and feel very shaky still. What to do?

I would go back to your GP or mental health professional ASAP and tell them how you feel.

Can you distract yourself tonight? Sooth yourself with hot drinks, a bath, a favourite book, a magazine etc. I know it sounds trite but it is about getting through it hour by hour.

If you feel really unsafe you can go to A&E for the crisis team but it can be a long wait.

Take care x

I only have a gp. What are they likely to do/say?

Hello pretty, sorry to hear how you're feeling. Has your GP put you on the waiting list for any talking therapies? That could be a step forward. You are doing really well keeping yourself safe and reaching out on here. Big hug x

Oh pretty it's very common to have exactly that thought when we are depressed. I have intermittent depression and anxiety and sometimes it can be severe and I can't tell you how many times I've thought things like that. Depression is a very deceitful illness and makes us think things about ourselves that aren't true. It makes us feel worthless, and useless and hopeless, so it follows we think we are no good for anything and that people would be better off without us.

I think you're scared because of the way you feel - it is very scary to feel out of control, anxiety means fear, and I think we are afraid of being afraid if that makes sense.

Is this your first episode and do you know the root cause. Sometimes helps if you know the cause. To be honest I don't think your GP is going to be in any way concerned that you have this thought - it's a symptom of depression. Harder to understand than symptoms of physical illness but a symptom nonetheless.

How long have you been on the meds as sometimes you get worse before you get better and the dose often needs to be increased. Do you have a review appointment with the GP.

Lots of support on these threads............sleep well

Thank you. I have felt this before but it was such a strong feeling. All i want to do is curl up in bed now. I've just had my meds changed (just over a fortnight ago) and i do know things can get worse before they get better. I have another gp's appt a week tomorrow.

Grr...still struggling. Now want to self-harm. So far I've found other things to do, but it's tricky.

Oh pretty I'm scared too - I feel really awful today and have done for the past 10 days or so - been under duvet most of day. I sometimes get better in the evening. Do you have children - so many MNs do - at least mine are grown and so I don't have that worry. Oh god mental illness is an absolute torment isn't it.............sending you hugs through cyberspace
