Advice needed about sertraline

I have been on 50mg of sertraline for 4 weeks for PND, mainly anxiety and insomina. I had been feeling so much better for the past 7-10 days but in the 2 days started getting a lot more feelings of anxiety again. I was prescribed sleeping tablets also which I have been trying not to take.

Was wondering what other peoples experience of sertraline was/is. Had my 8 week post natal check today and discussed with GP how I am feeling. He was basically not very interested but said it could take up to 6 weeks to see effects. He said upping my dose would affect breastfeeding with the amount been passed to the baby and that I needed to weigh up pro's and cons of side effects. Left feeling none the wiser and rubbish for actually taking AD's in the first place.

Is it normal to have up and down days while adjusting? I thought I had been responding well but seem to have slipped backwards again. Really thought I would start feel progressively better by now.

I discussed taking sertraline with a specialist perinatal psychiatrist recently (am currently pregnant and can't decide whether to wait and see how I am and hold off taking anything till after baby is born) anyway - irrelevant info about me aside, he said that the first recognised effective dose was considered to be 100mg, the reason he suggested it rather than another ad in my case was that it is considered one of the safest in bfing. He seemed to be saying that with 50mg you would get any possible drawbacks but possibly no benefit to balance that out. Don't know if any of that makes sense but that's what I was told anyway.

50mg is a fairly low dose - you may need it increasing to about 100mg.
