I am in hospital. I was started on 300mg, then 400, then 600, now 800mg per day.
'Licensed daily dose rang in adults under 65: 50 - 750mg in two doses, up to 800mg in mania (usual dose range 300 - 450mg). The ward manager does not think that I am either manic or psychotic, but she points out that she is only (!) a nurse, and that i must talk to my psychiatrist. i only see him for about 10 minutes a week and he uses that time to ask me questions, whereas I want to ask him questions. I can honestly say that the only effect that I have experienced in constipation. Does anyone have any experience/information, and, in such large doses, what could it be doing to me, which I might not have noticed, due to the large dosage? I have written this message before so let me know if it is posted in the wrong place and thanks in advance for any guidance.

Could you write down a list of the questions that you have for the psychiatrist, to help you when your see him?

Could you ask either the ward manager or your named nurse to attend the ward meeting with you to support you in asking the questions that you have?

My advocate is attending the meeting tomorrow, and I am going to let her do the talking. Why am I on such a high dose when I have no symptoms of mania; I have read my 'progress notes', ie nurse observations and there is nothing of this.
Do you know anything about this particular drug? I realise that I might not be aware of its affects on me but I have felt nothing except constipation. At first I was not co-operative (traumatised by sheer surprise of being manhandled and taken in ratcheted handcuffs into police van which had been outside my house for 4 hours; I am 8 stone; I do not understand the violence. So the dosage was upped. Since then I have tried to be the model patient (apart from doing jigsaws) and again, the dose has been upped. The dose seems to be upped whatever I do, however I 'present'. Is there an upper limit for this drug? i am a very faddy organic bore and I have no idea what this high dosage is doing to me?

hi sorry to hear you are in hospital, i am on seroquel too,300mg, so i don't really know what the side effects are at 800mg sorry. I agree its a good idea to write your questions down and take it in with you. there is a forum on the MDF uk site
www.mdf.org.uk/?o=56851 there might be more people on that dosage who can help you

I've sent a pm to a regular on here who is on a high dose of the stuff and has some experience of being an inpatient. I'm sure she will post if she's up to it.

I am bipolar and was on 300mg for a few years. Main side effects were massive weight gain and sedation. But I have now comeoff it, just on Depakoke and lithium instead. You must ask your psychiatrist all the questions you can think of. They don't necessarily think of giving you info because to them its second nature. Take care.

You really need to ask your psychiatrist why you're on such a high dose. I'm currently on 500mg but my pysch may increase it up to 800mg if I don't improve. 800mg is the highest dose though.

It can cause heart problems so I certainly don't want to be taking a dose any higher than is absolutely necessary and I'm guessing that's the same for you too.
