stammering after stressful events

Not sure if I am in the right place but was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this. About seven years ago, my ds was diagnosed as autistic and it hit me hard. I kept a good lid on it but had a few panic attacks which I dealt with myself but started to have at first quite slight problems with my speech which have continued. I don't stammer all the time but do sometimes and it is affecting me at work now. I have come to terms with my ds condition as much as anyone can I think, but still remain very sad about it. I don't really know what to do about it. Would having counselling make any difference, is it a psychological problem or not? Any ideas?

I had this problem quite severely following a panic attack brought on by a trauma. Am sure it "makes sense" as a symptom of anxiety..if your body/hands can get shakey so can your voice? It was rubbish having it at work but people were sympathetic apart from the impatient GP receptionists! I had counselling for the underlying cause and the stammer disappeared after about 3 months maybe. Sometimes now if I'm stressed it comes back and I actually find it a very helpful warning sign to myself to slow down/get support/address what is making me anxious. So yes in my experience I think counselling did make a difference. Hope you can get some support too, sounds like it might be helpful. All the best.
