I was diagnosed with pnd yesterday... don't want to take the pills!

I went to the doctor because I feel so stressed a lot - stress is definitely my main emotion and irritability...

The doctor asked me to do the Edinburgh test and I got a score of 16, so she gave me citalopram.

I feel that I'd rather get on with it than take the pills... does this mean that I don't really need them anyway? I' haven't a clue as this is all new for me.

Thanks...

You could say use them as a short term measure say give it 6 months at least. You could have a chemical imbalance which ADs will help with. Then look for other ways to combat your other symptoms. The tablets will help you cope in the short term. Did your doctor offer CBT? Could you afford say to have hypnotherapy, go to a yoga/relaxation class?

I have tried lots of alternative therapies and feel I've come out the other end but it has taken 2 years. There is no quick fix. I chose not to take ADs but was offered them.

Good luck. x

Forgot to ask how old your baby was? Is it your first? Have you got good support?

Hello! Thanks so much for your reply. It's my second baby - she's 7 months. I was fine at first pnd check soon after birth. I wonder if the diagnosis is right - I do feel stressed & down but not truly dreadful...

I promise citalopram will help. I take it and it has been a lifesaver. The thing was,I didn't realize how bad I felt 'before' until they kicked in and then was amazed at the difference in myself.

Thanks so much Topaz - that sounds encouraging.

Can I ask, durham, what you think are useful / effective alternative therapies?

I found the CBT very useful though it does depend on the counsellor. The first person I saw wasn't very good but the next person was much more qualified and I found it very helpful. I also had hypnotherapy which really is just deep relaxation. The therapist made up some cds for me and they helped me sleep.

I am also very particular with my diet and I did take some supplements such as magnesium which helps calm the nervous system and I am exercising most days even if it is just going for a walk.

Are you able to get some time for yourself? Hard I know when you have small children. Smile

Thanks again - I am taking magnesium - I thought I had a particularly awful (& seemingly permanent) case of PMT!
