Fasting / 5:2 diet

5:2 and fertility

I'm hoping someone knows something about fasting and fertility. Google is a mixed bag, with some places saying it's a no-no and others saying the weight loss will help with fertility and therefore it's a good idea.

I'm recovering from a mmc but want to start ttc again once I've had my first period post miscarriage. So I'd be fasting and ttc at the same time. Does anyone have any advice or insight? TIA Smile

I don't have any expert advice but I would imagine it's not a good idea. You also may not be getting enough vitamins if you're fasting so at the very least you should be taking supplements such as folic acid before you get pregnant.

I think it could be good. A lot of people get pregnant on exante apparently.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I got pregnant with my first (planned, post mmc) doing the 5:2 accidentally (stressful life!) and then accidentally pregnant with my third doing a deliberate 5:2 having lost a stone in 3 months. Both 10lb healthy babies. Just take a multi vitamin and try and learn to eat healthily while your doing the 5:2. I put on a tonne of weight once I realised I was pregnant as every day became a “5” day 😂.

Thanks all. I started this week. I just decided to go for it and see what happens! 🤷‍♀️

My friend couldn’t conceive and was trying for years (around 6 I think). She conceived her first cycle on 5:2 - maybe a coincidence but mighty strange all the same!

Go back through the old 5:2 threads
a significant number of unexpected babies ;-)

So long as you are eating a healthy mix of foods, aiming to eat less during pregnancy should be fine for somebody who is overweight

YY to Folic Acid and Vitamin D (but that applies to everybody)

Focus on micronutrients and all should be good

Fasting reduces inflammation in the body generally and PCOS sufferers report significant improvements. Autophagy is cell renewal. With the right supplements I can't think it would be bad.

Does anyone have any experience of the 2:5 diet (fasting) and fertility?
I was diagnosed with PSOS a few years ago and was about to go through ivf but conceived naturally and while doing a 2:5 diet. Not sure if it was a coincidence?!
We would like to have another baby and have been trying for a fair few months while monitoring ovulation etc. Now I'm wondering about starting the 2:5 again to see if it will help. I'm breastfeeding twice a day still though (son is 23 months) so don't want to reduce my nutrients.
