Trying to get clever guts!(9 Posts)
I'm still slowly making changes and I'm taking a probiotic supplement now. It's hard to isolate whether I'm improving my health as I'm doing so much more but I do feel healthier!
Hi Fanjo I was v impressed with it. I got the app which was only 99p and has lots of recipes. If nothing else it's given me a good excuse to eat cheese! 😉
If you want to build on your microbiome knowledge I highly recommend the book The Diet Myth. I’m about to start reading it for the second time.
I think it is as much as getting the good bacteria and then having the diet to make them thrive, otherwise it is useless. So eat for them, a very high plant fibre and resistant starch diet.
Because you can eat all the probiotics in the worlds but if you then eat sugars and junk, crisps, and so on, the other bacteria will develop. You need to feed one group and starve the other to make a difference
I make my own Kefir. It’s really easy and is rich in a wide range of bacteria. The supermarket Kefir is made from powdered starter and is not as diverse apparently. I do appreciate that that this not for everyone though. I have Ibs and Kefir every day really helps control my symptoms.I also believe it helps with sugar cravings. The only issue is once you start the grains multiply quickly do you end up with loads to give away or freeze.
I tend to get the Yeo Valley full fat live natural yoghurt, I also had a goats milk yoghurt for the first time last week. I'd like to get round to making my own.
I'm also drinking supermarket kefir 2-3 times a week plus have apple cider vinegar on salads.
I found a fermentation course the other day which some news interesting...
This is very interesting <waves to grim from BSD thread > , I’m thinking exactly the same as you. I don’t think I need to (or want to) fully follow the guts plan but I’d like to incorporate some elements into my current diet. I also want to into my son’s diet as he gets every cold going and I’d like to boost him up before the winter. I currently do BSD and even if I don’t actively do it for weight loss I follow ‘the rules’ mostly.
For 6 weeks I’m going to try to:
Have live yoghurt daily (me and Ds)
Eat less processed meat/ham/pork products (me and Ds)
Cut out the sweetener I have in my coffee (and try to cut down the coffee too!)
And see what happens. I don’t have ‘bowel issues’ so not really sure what improvements I’ll see, if any.
Can anyone recommend a live yogurt?
Every day I make sure to eat for my little guys there. I eat quite a large amount of veggies and alternated between leeks ( green part included), asparagus again hard bits not removed, I even eat raw dandelion root. Artificial sweeteners are serial killers for good bacteria. So avoid them in any form and quantity.
Do you own sauerkraut, roast onions in oven, ...
I do it to strengthen my immune system. I have a tumour induckng syndrome so I work on several fronts to prevent them.
Curcumin has been proven to be beneficial to gut species so you might want to look into that as well.
At the moment I am nearing the end of 12 weeks bsd and combining it with 16:8.
Moseley fan girl that I am so have just read Clever Guts and a lot of it made perfect sense. I do think that my biome could be contributing to my weight issues so I'm starting to work on this s too.
