Eat it:
Protein sources such as meat, eggs, fish, tofu, nuts
Veg- 'above ground' veg
Fruit- apples, pears, berries
Dairy- cheese, milk, cream, cottage cheese, full fat Greek yoghurt
Fibre- increase your fibre intake to approx 14g per 1000 cals of food.

Beat it:
Sugar. Natural sugar (honey, molasses, dates, fruit syrups) included.
Potatoes (sweet and all white varieties)
Bread, and most flours (some flours made of chickpeas, almonds, coconuts etc are ok) - and all foods containing flour such as bread, pasta,
Rice
Cereals , except a very occasional portion of steel cut porridge if necessary
Alcohol- consume in moderation. It will impede your insulin regulation and slow down your progress, but a small drink occasionally of red wine or spirit won't be the end of the world!

Track it
use a calorie tracker to keep on top of your intake.
You can aim to keep carb grams under 50 per day as a guide, but not compulsory
We aim to eat 800 calories per day, but some have found 1000 more manageable, and achieve similar weight loss if carbs are kept low.

Please feel free to add anything I've missed!

I was kindly linked here from another thread. Slightly intimidated by the low, low calories but willing to learn and give it a go.

Honestly it really is not that bad. I urge you to buy the book though - it's about £4 in most supermarkets.

I've found the 800 easiest to stick to by doing 16:8 too - so basically I eat all my calories in an 8 hour window. That way, I just don't seem to get hungry.

I am trying this but feeling nervous. I have a cruise next week so think I will get the book and have a read and start when I get back. Is it hard to do while cooking other things for the rest of the family?

Oh and thanks for the lovely shiny new thread newaveragebear.

It's bloody cold and chucking it down here so I had a boiled egg and a piece of LivLife toast for lunch and having Sarah Raven's chicken puttanesca (from Fast Diet recipe book for dinner). If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it www.getthegloss.com/article/the-fast-diet-recipe-book-sarah-raven-s-chicken-puttanesca

I'm not sure I'm quite ready to do this but am considering it. Can I ask what you have for breakfast? I love my cereal and I can't eat eggs in the morning and I wondered what other things people would suggest?
Also I have a diet coke addiction, would I have to give it up?

ikeadyounot · 30/08/2017 16:03

I do need to buy the book!

How does the calorie counting work? If I do 600 cals of exercise, can I eat an extra 600?

I lost a lot of weight successfully a few years ago on a plan where I ate 1200-1500 calories but exercised 600-800 off, which I guess is a similar net figure?

Thanks for the new thread bear Flowers Gin
I am tired and hangry today but on the plus side, I made am amazing gratin yesterday with a pile of ingredients I had to use up. It was delicious.
Jiggly that recipe sounds good - thanks.
Hello to all the new peeps
deblet often you can cook the same food for the rest of the family - just give them a portion of carbs (eg pasta, rice, potatoes) where you have salad.
Captain I'm not a big fan of breakfast so can't really help. I do sometimes have avocado.
ikea different people have different approaches to exercise calories. Some eat back half. Some stick to 800 regardless of exercise. I'm sure some of the fitter BSDers will be able to give you more advice.

Welcomes all newbies. We are all very nice here!!

Don't get me wrong, it is hard. but Deblet I manage to feed Dh and 2 ds's with a bit of jiggery pokery. Say I make a huge pot of spag Bol mince, then they have spaghetti and Dh and I have courgettes shaved into big strips with a potato peeler. Not too much hassle.

Other times I just do something for myself. But that's actually rare. If I had to do that all the time I think I got a bit ga-ga-spare because I struggle to think of different meals to feed us all, as it is!!

And Captain many of us find breakfast 🍳 tricky. And if you don't do eggs that makes it even harder because I do eat a lot of eggs- poached, Spanish omelette, as part of bacon tomatoes, mushrooms - proper breakfast.

But what about youghurt and blueberries? Some ham, cheese, or smoked samon?

Thanks oblomov17 that is a good idea. Just cook what I need and add stuff for them. Is quorn allowed as i have veggies to cook for?

Thanks for the new thread. I think I am going to hit 1100 cals today but hardly any carb. I think my stir fry for dinner is a bit too beef heavy!

Hmm, not sure why there is Quorn in the vegan part of the recipe section unless it's the new vegan one?

Hello.
This sounds interesting.

I do have a sugar addiction.
Is this difficult to start?
I don't eat breakfast.
Could I please have examples of meals that you eat?
I think this diet could be for me, once I get over the not eating pie thing Grin

Wow, lots of newbies! Welcome, welcome.

With regards to family meals- I just tend to do mine sans carbs and with extra veg which usually works. My kids eat surprisingly well on this plan, and we don't eat potatoes (except occasional chips) anyway. Uncle bens rice pouches do the Dh and the dc.

With regards to breakfast, the one thing I honestly miss on this plan is cereal. I love breakfast. I miss it. All the best worst carbs are breakfast foods. Sigh. I tend to either avoid altogether, or have a small platter of avocado, ham and cheese. I manage ok without it , provided that I prepare for lunch, otherwise I find I'm just in the fridge picking. I need a proper planned, high protein lunch with some fat if I skip breakfast.

Herroyal the recipes in the book are good as a starting point, although I find them a little beany. I tweak a lot of Jamie Oliver stuff (hoping to buy his new book at the weekend for some new inspiration), plus I download a lot from Pinterest. You also can't beat the old meat/veg/herbs combo. So, tonight, chicken in garlic with lemon and cream, served with broccoli. You could season any meat and serve with salad. Stir fry chicken/pork and veg. Roast without the spuds ( I always have gravy even though it's banned!) I'm lucky because I really really love salad, and will happily eat a decent salad any day or night (or both). I'm all egged out after being on this so long, although I do boil some up as snacks occasionally.

thanks average
I like a good salad too.
I will have to buy the book. I get paid tomorrow so will have to go shopping (well shop online, as I'm out of the house 8-7 and have 3 kids and don't drive!)
I tend to prepare meals for the family in advance that I can stick in the slow cooker, and I eat separately to the kids as I get in so late so it isn't a problem trying to feed them as well, I can follow the diet and give them completely different meals if needed.

My problem is snacking.

I can do really well all day. I rarely eat during the day anyway, and as long as I drink plenty of water I'm fine until evening.
But then I have a meal, then carry on eating crap and drinking fizzy drinks (mainly fizzy drinks to be honest)
I know I'm not hungry, but I crave those foods. I'm hoping that once I'm used to this the cravings will vanish.

Do you like cheese herroyal? If you have s small piece of cheese, the smellier the better when you get that sugar craving after meals it can really help. Partly because you can't enjoy pudding when your mouth is full of Stilton. That sugar craving once you eat is all to do with your insulin response and will calm down dramatically once you get fully into the plan. I'm a snacker/grazer too and I really struggle sometimes. It's easier I find when I go cold turkey and don't snack at all rather than when I allow certain things. There are lots of 'allowed' foods which are still banned in my house (nuts, cheese slices) as I cannot stop picking at them!

Hi all,

I'm looking for some help as I'm
really struggling on mfp. I'm veggie and a cheese fiend and an emotional eater. I've no idea how to fill up on protein as pulses don't help my ibs. Anyway I'm petrified by the low calories you're describing on here. I can barely fit my current food into 1640 kcals a day hence why I'm not shifting any weight. I need to lose 2- 2.5 stones. I'm really grumpy when hungry and on my feet all day (teacher) not getting in until 6 with the kids to feed. Is this plan possible for me? I feel like such a fat heifer who has lost all her motivation. I don't want to end up diabetic like my poor aunty who died too young as a result of being morbidly obese. TIA
