I've posted this before calorie counting doesn't seem to work

Basically unless I literally starve myself nothing bloody works.
I've done the body coach, eat gain train tried just not having cake, bread, anything processed and I'm fat.
Smoking and eating dust works.
This can't be right really can it

Have you tried "My Fitness Pal"? If you stick to 1200 calories a day or a little less you should start to lose weight.

There are several elements to successfully losing weight.

Diet is one, exercise is another. For exercise you need to be doing weights which increase muscle mass which is good because muscles burn calories, skin and fat don't so that's an import part. Some cardiovascular work will help burn calories too thus burning off any bits of excess / helping burn overweight fat deposits.

If you are not losing weight/still gaining weight then you're obviously eating too much/eating the wrong things/not eating enough of the right things/not exercising enough/doing the wrong combinations of exercise.

Would need a lot more info to have any insight into where you might be going wrong but happy to help further if you can provide more info.

You see 1200 a day did nothing, the eat train gain put me on 1600 calories a day and yes I'm weight training, I've been doing boxing for years. Am fit with a gut it's so depressing

You're not telling us what you actually eat within that 1600....

Are you overweight?

I have a bit of a tum/flab, but at a bmi of 23 my body just doesn't let go of any more fat Grin so I stick with excercise and the diet I have, and just bow to my body's wisdom (eat when hungry, and eat what I fancy).

Unless you have an under active thyroid chances are your eating more calories than you think. It's impossible to eat 1200 and not lose anything at all.

A calorie is not a calorie is not a calorie ...

How carb-heavy is your diet? If your calories are coming mainly from carbs, you're much less likely to lose weight than if your calories are coming from protein and fat.

I think it must be carbs that's the only thing I can think that I'm doing differently

You MUST be eating too much/eating the wrong things!

Tell us already, WHAT ARE YOU EATING?!! Exactly.

Today
Bowl of shreddies
Two slices of whole meal toast, butter, but if marmite
Banana
Baked sweet potato
Couple of cups of tea.

That's standard at the weekend

Week days, 2 lattes
Sometimes a couple of biscuits
M&S bacon and egg sandwich
Not enough water at the moment
Generally that's it.
I know it's not enough calories

I'm going to go out on a limb here but seriously, if that was all you were eating you would be losing weight even if you weren't exercising so something's amiss here.

Well im simply not and am exercising, barre booty twice last week incorporating mountain climbers, so easy in theory but actually hot quite sweaty, kettle bells each day.

I have PCOS. I have to eat less than 1000 calories a day to see any significant weight loss and that will be slow. So it is entirely possible you aren't losing weight. I don't find it matters what I eat as long as I stick to less than 1000 calories. Less carbs help but no carbs definitely doesn't.

I exercise 5 times a week- mostly running for an hour or cycling. That doesn't really help me lose weight it may help my metabloism and keep it off but I suspect I eat a little more when I'm exercising. I did the ligaments in my ankle 2 months ago and still can't exercise properly and I've lost a significant amount of weight.

It's not just not enough calories, where are the nutrients? There's no veg in that list apart from the sweet potato and whatever salad is in the sandwich.

That's the problem isn't it? I need an overhaul 😩

I just put those foods into FatSecret and they came out at 1,846 calories 52% of which came from carbohydrates of one type or another.

Fat 31% and protein 17%.

I would ditch the sandwich (have what you'd have in the sandwich but toss the bread), I'd have a fried egg or scrambled eggs for breakfast instead of shreddies as you're already having some wholemeal in the form of bread - you'll feel fuller and then you won't want the two biscuits which if you left them out and the bread from the sandwich, that would save you 348 calories and bring the total for the day down to 1,498 calories for the day which, if you're exercising like you are, wouldn't be too bad.

I'd drop the (probably milky) latte's as well as there's a lot of carbs in that due to the milk - and the coffee of course. Swap them out for water. The latte's are probably over 300 calories and they're not giving you anything.

But I would want to see more nutrition dense foods so wholemeal toast with mashed avocado and chia seeds sprinkled on top for brekky. Or instead of a sandwich for lunch have crisy lettuce, avocado, some pieces of cooked bacon, walnuts - forget the bread and you'd be getting more goodness as well.

Don't know how that sounds....

I'm going through a can't stop eating phase at the moment but this is what I do when I want to lose weight. I have quite a bit of protein and I throw in as much nutrition dense food as I possibly can.

2 lattes and a sandwich aren't 1800 no way lol

It's impossible to tell the calories though. The lattes - what size? Which milk? Two biscuits could mean anything - double choc chip cookies or two Nice biscuits. Ditto with the "bowl of shreddies" - unless you weigh them and measure the milk you can't tell.

Pisssssedofff · 13/11/2016 19:37

Yeah I agree, I'm confident it's not 1800 though I really am

Two lattes - Starbucks are 190 x 2
M&s bacon egg sandwich is 476 (as far as I can find). So around 850 to 1000 cals depending on latte size/milk.

JemimaMuddledUp · 13/11/2016 19:56

2 large lattes = 400-500 calories
Bacon and egg sandwich = around 500 calories
Couple of biscuits = 150-200 calories

So that is around 1200 calories just from those three. I maintain at around 1500, I would lose at 1200. But I would eat a lot more nutrient dense food for my 1200 calories!

A bowl of cereal can easily be 350 calories, thick slices of toast with plenty of butter easily 450. Sweet potato would depend on size, but a 350g one (which is the size of the baking sweet potatoes in Tesco) is around 350 calories before you put anything (butter, cheese etc) on top. Depending on size a banana is 100-150. Do you have sugar and milk in your tea? Tea itself is 0, but obviously the sugar and milk can mount up.

No no sugar in the tea. It's still under what you'd expect to eat to gain though isn't it ... Am going to eat better though next week ... Get up earlier and cook a proper breakie

More protein and less carb might help?

Report
Pollyanna9 · 13/11/2016 20:15

It's not 'impossible' to know how many calories - you can make an educated calculation though! I chose medium latte's not large ones, digestives not any special fancy chocolate coated nut filled giant cookie - I erred on the side of caution and as Jemima says, some of the food items are accounting for up to 1,200 carb-high/calorie-high nutrient-low calories.

The calorie count conducted by two different people confirms that the total calories are too high and the content is wrong.

I erred on the low side but the figures are the figures.
