Terrible side-effects of Mirena

I got the Mirena coil fitted approximately 4 weeks ago. I had very light spotting for the first day then nothing. Very little pain or cramps so I was happy.

Flash forward to 2weeks later, I had terrible mood swings, was very teary and feeling I couldn’t cope. I have a 3y/o and 6m/o and was panicking that I was developing PND. I rang DH one day at work and told him I was running away, I was an unfit mother and the girls didn’t deserve me (this is very very unlike me - I am usually very level headed and up until this week, felt I was coping well). I had PND with my first baby but was brought on by going through a difficult time with family etc. This was a very sudden and scary change of emotions 2 weeks ago when I suddenly wanted to run away, it was like a flick of a switch! I rang the docs and got an appointment for 3 days later. 2 days after that day, I was back to feeling fine so I cancelled the appointment.

My period came 2 days later (so 5days after the breakdown), very heavy and sore. It has lasted now for roughly 10days and doesn’t feel like it’s letting up any time soon! My periods were normally very light and lasted 3-4days.

Has anyone else experienced this with the Mirena? Awful PMS and terrible periods?

I realised I've just posted something very similar. I've had it for three months now and have been bleeding every day. Immediately I noticed a change in my mood, I felt positively murderous. I've also had pretty bad spots. Not sure whether to stick with it for much longer, which is a shame as I was looking forward to being period free.

That sounds horrendous. I had nothing like that. It took a few months for my periods to settle down & finally disappear completely, but after that I had no issues with it at all.

Acne. Very very bad acne. No periods though. And mood swings.

It's most likely due to the disruption in your hormones. I had one fitted because of very heavy periods, and after a couple of weeks, when my period was due, I too felt particularly bad and bled for about 2 weeks heavily (but not as bad as before) then for another month very lightly. By 4 months my periods had stopped completely. No more mood swings.

Yes, it had a horrible effect on my mood, anxiety etc. (remember locking myself in the office and crying under my desk one afternoon). Didn’t get the periods though but like you told DP I had to run away.

I had it out after 3 months and HCP was very reluctant to remove it - said it couldn’t possibly have affected my mental health.

I had a mirena after my second child. Prior to the mirena, periods meant excruciating cramps, back ache, flooding and clotting. I had a hard time for the first 10 months and was on the verge of getting it taken out. I bled almost daily, had cramps, had mood swings and I hated it. Suddenly, everything settled down. Since that initial 10 months 6 years ago, I’ve had no periods, only occasional cramps and my mood has stabilised. It’s changed my life for the better. I’m now on my second mirena coil and intend to get a third one (I’ve been told my third will be my last due to my age). It’s given me my life back, in a way.

Please speak with your GP or another health professional though. What you are experiencing may or may not be related. Either way, it needs addressing.

@HabbyHadno I know, it seemed like forever! I very nearly gave up on it as I thought it just didn’t agree with me and at least my prior cycle gave me 2.5-3 weeks respite. Was worth the shit 10 months in the end. Experiences seem to vary so much from person to person though. I’d probably have got it removed earlier if it wasn’t such an ordeal getting it in in the first place!
