I had the implant back in Feb 2 weeks after I had the depo. I have bled everyday since the implant. I'm due a smear this week and explained to my doctor I can't cope with the side effects, mood swings, period cramps, itching, hair falling out and bleeding ( not heavy but not light either). She prescribed norethisterone (day 5 15mg aday no effect what so ever) so i can have the smear but won't consider removing it for another 4 months. Any one else had this issue and does it stop and settle?

I had this. They wouldn’t remove it for 9 months and I was still told off for demanding it out. In my experience it didn’t stop and continued for 2months after removal but I think some women have had it settle. I think the thing is you will never know if it is just going to start back up again. Nobody does. Maybe try family planning and see if u get any further with them? Best of luck

I am on my 4th implant. My experience is that it does settle down. But, how long it takes varies. My first implant I had bleeding for a few months, and then no bleeding at all for well over a year. My third implant I had bleeding for the first year (then it settled down). I am 4 months into my 4th implant and am on a minipill daily to help stem the bleeding. I took norethisterone for my smear, which came back abnormal. The nurse who did the LLETZ treatment on me for my abnormal cells said the bleeding may be in part due to the abnormal cells, so I am hoping that might be the case. I was overdue a smear by a few years, so the last few years of irregularlity may have been due to the cells, or the implant, or a combo. Personally the side effects of the norethisterone are worse than the bleeding so I choose to just stay on the desogestrel which controls the bleeding (or stops it if it isn't so heavy to start with). I would rather do this than rely on any other method of contraception, as it is the most reliable.

Bottom line- I have had this issue 4 times. Yes it did settle down. Sometimes it settled quickly (as in a few months) sometimes not so quickly (a year).

I had the implant for around 5 months and couldn't take it any longer. It made me bleed pretty much the entire time I had it and it was exhausting. The doctor tried to prescribe me the mini pill but it didn't work and it defeated the object of having the implant. I went back to the sexual health centre where I had it put in and asked them to take it out which they did and I've been on the patch ever since no issues

Thankyou for your replies,
I took norethisterone for 10 days which failed to make any difference and have since been prescribed the mini pill, which defeats the object of the implant in my opinion. I'm still waiting for the pill to have an effect, and have had to rearrange my smear appointment again, I've had severe dyskaryosis twice and had 3 little ones close together so I'm very over due which also makes me wonder if this bleeding is caused by abnormal cells, the doctor has agreed to remove it as the side effects just are not worth it. Exhaustion, bleeding, mood swings and itching. I'm not a nice person to live with 😐
