Mirena insertion pain - normal?

Hi, had my Mirena coil fitted today and it hurt like hell. (Have recently gone through a 40 hour back to back labour and it was up there). But it was a kind of pain I wasn't expecting at all. I'd describe it as a severe searing pain, which suddenly shot over to my right side. Felt like she'd stuck a red hot poker up there. Shock I properly yelped. Normal period like cramping now as expected but there's still that right sided pain present, albeit subsided. Anyone else been through similar? Is it a nerve thing or has something gone wrong? Confused

Mine was also agony. Very sharp pain, much worse then I’d expected.
Don’t want to worry you but it turned out mine had punctured my uterus and was somewhere in my abdomen. The first indication of this was when my dr checked for the strings and couldn’t find them. Many months and 2 surgeries later t was removed. I went for an implant instead

Mine was awful too. Would never get it again!

Mine was incredibly painful too. Also felt like my vagina and uterus were very tender for a few days afterwards. All good after that.

Removal was a breeze by the way!

The nurse finally got mine in on the 3rd or 4th attempt. I was practically climbing the walls. I don’t know how I managed to stagger home before I collapsed for hours with hot water bottle and horrendous contractions.
So yes, I found it pretty painful! I then had bleeding for a couple of weeks and then crazy pregnancy symptoms for a while

The nurse also made me lie down for a while as said it can make some people faint

Thanks ladies, crikey northdownmummy, what a nightmare. Yes I've read about that happening. Can I ask, did the pain get worse over time? And was it still that sharp pain, rather than cramping? I'm obviously going to monitor it closely and check for strings.

No, the pain didn’t get worse. I had about a week of cramping and discomfort then nothing at all. It was only getting the 6 week check that spotted a problem. And I’m very lucky, when I went in to the doctor he said “ I didn’t think we did this anymore, weren’t you told to check yourself?”

I will never have any kind of coil again as the insertion was as bad as having contractions. And they don’t use a local anaesthetic, only the gel that isn’t in contact with the mucosa long enough to actually provide any anaesthesia. I took ibuprofen before the appointment but it didn’t help.
Some women find insertion very easy and not as painful, however.

Wasn't as severe as you're describing, but I had pain on the left side. Had it done yesterday, ok now except for the occasional twinge.
