Mirena

I’ve had the Mirena coil fitted 4 weeks on Tuesday and just have a couple of questions about anyone’s experience.

Firstly my period came a week early, does this sound normal?

Secondly, my period is heavier and lasting longer than pre-Mirena which is concerning me as I’m hoping this isn’t a sign of things to come - especially as from what I’ve read the Mirena is supposed to help ease heavy long periods.

Just wondering whether I need to give it more time or if I should go and have it checked out?

I had mine fitted over a year ago and was told it can take up to 6 months for periods to settle.

Hang in there, i was told it would be 6 months to settle and it was. OP yours sounds similar to mine as i seem to remember i was early and heavy and i felt really disappointed. Log it all down in your little book and soon you'll see that your periods will be few and far between. Have you been back to have it checked and the strings cut? I went back for the check and they couldn't find the strings. Panicked a lot. Had to go for an ultra sound and thankfully it was in place.

My first Mirena took about three months to settle after which I stopped having periods at all.

This is all normal, mine took about 4 months to settle but now I have basically no periods.

Thank you all for your replies, it’s giving me hope!

Polo the doctor said they don’t do check ups anymore but if I have any problems then to make an appointment. I obviously need to give it more time though judging from everyone’s replies so that’s what I’ll do and hope it settles soon 🤞

Good luck OP. It'll be fine, best thing i did. I've had mine 14 months and I've more or less forgotten about it. I get the odd spots of blood but it's virtually nothing and to be pain free every month is wonderful. My skins cleared up too whereas before i would get hormonal spots once a month.
It'll be fine x

I’ve had my mirena for about 10 months and my periods are still there, heavier than before with awful pmt. I was expecting them to stop as when I was on drop I had none at all. It seems they stop for most people tho

Thanks Polo, funnily enough last night was the first time since my period started that I didn’t bleed and it seems to be much lighter already today.

Mary have you thought about having it taken out or are you just resigned to it?

I keep hoping it will settle in, but I do wonder if it’s still there
