Hi

Im looking for your help ladies. Apologise in advance for the lenghty post.

My daughter is approching 20. Was put on the pill at 14/15 due to heavy very painful periods. Starting taking Yasmin and worked a treat to start with. About 18 months ago started spotting - should point out by this time she had long term boyfriend so was also using as contraceptive. Went to docs who advised that her body may have got too used to Yasmin so changed to Microgynon 30. Ok to start with but then had terrible spots and painful acne on back. Back to docs who advised using Dianette but did say couldnt use this long term. Dianette cleared up the acne but she did start getting thrush and wasnt sure if it was related to the Dianetter.

Back to docs for advice as she had been on this pill for approx 8 months and was initially told should only use it for 6 months. Anyway decided to go back to Yasmin. Again ok to start with but has started spotting again ( must say she has terrible mood swings on Yasmin too) so wants to change pill.

Problem is we dont have any idea what others to suggest so was hoping that someone out there could help. Ive read decent reviews about Mercilon?

Cheers

I can sympathise as I've had my own issues with oral contraceptives, have you tried Ovranette?

Dianette is my 'favourite', it really is a marvel with the spots and I'd be very surprised if it had anything to do with the trush.

I can't remember the name of another one I took, it wasn't right for me but could be good for your daughter, I'll try to see if I can look it up.

Cilest! It's got more oestrogen in it and is specifically designed for women who get 'outbreak' bleeding or spotting in between periods.

Hope it helps!

I took Mercilon for over 6 years and loved it as it just seemed to 'suit' me unlike other pills which gave me acne, bloating, mood swings, weight gain etc. My skin was amazing, I lost my puppy fat, no probs at all.

However - and it's a big however - I did then get pregnant whilst taking it correctly! Maybe my body did something odd and I didn't absorb it properly or something? It worked totally fine for so many years, and no contraceptive is ever 100% effective, so maybe I was just unlucky (I shouldn't say that, I was v v lucky indeed as DS is the most amazing being that ever lived in the whole universe, but you know what I mean). This could happen with any pill of course.

Everyone reacts differently to different progestins - Microgynon turned me into a depressed wailing banshee, Loestrin made me put 2.5 stone on, Dianette made me nauseous, Femodene gave me awful acne and cysts. Friends have had very different experiences with different pills, so it is trial and error.

I mistyped above - it was 16 YEARS not 6, so it did work for a v long time with no problems!

Roomba is right it's different for everyone. So it's a bit of a trial and error process.

Much like Roomba my problems finding a good contraceptive pill were due to getting pregnant while on the pill (as roomba says while taking it correctly, not having been sick or any of the other mitigating factors they put in their small print. There's a reason they don't say it's 100% effective ha)

Loestrin 20 - dream. It stopped my periods completely, no withdrawal bleed despite the week pill free.
