Would I be a candidate for sterilisation?

I know no one knows the answer to this except whichever consultant I end up seeing but I'm hoping someone with some knowledge or experience with this might be able to help.

I've just found out I'm pregnant with number 4, I'm guessing about 5/6 weeks so early days and whilst we're excited, I'm already thinking about a lot of things for post birth.

I have taken the pill religiously since ds3 but still fallen pregnant.
I will have this baby and love it like I do my other 3, they were all conceived whilst on a different form of contraception.

My eldest has a life long. Life limiting condition that is getting worse and will only get worse, he (we) spends a lot of time in hospital.

I'm 28 so although young I have had (or will have) enough children, we don't want anymore, it's not faro to bring anymore along with the already stretched time we have.

I'm going to ask for a c-section with this birth and would like to request sterilisation while it's being done.

I've tried,

Condoms
Merina coil
Cerazette
Depo injection

All used properly and fallen pregnant on all of them.

Do you think given my history it will be something I'll be granted or not sue to my age?

I'm not sure whether they will say yes, but given your reasons it certainly sounds like a reasonable request, so I would hope it would be a yes. Congratulations on the pregnancy!

I don't have experience but I would be very surprised (& cross) if a woman with 4 children was refused sterilisation simply because she was just 28.

I had a sterilisation on baby no4, they were very supportive, but only because I was 40 at the time.

I've heard that in some areas, they won't actually sterilise you during a c-section because of the cost (Kent I heard, from a gp). Massively short-sighted of course! Your age will go against you. Even when I went to have my section/sterilisation, one consultant said dh should be getting it instead .

Good luck, you sound like you have a lot on your plate, I do hope you get a sympathetic ear. I found mentioning it at each appointment was useful, that would really put you in good stead as it has been well-documented in your notes (fills the counselling quota!).

Would your partner consider a vasectomy if you find the hospital unsupportive?

I think I'll have to fight for a c-section anyway so there's no harm fighting for this too.

It depends on the obstetric consultant - where I work we do tubal ligation during lscs and the youngest woman I can think of was 23, on her 4th baby. All you can do is ask! Good luck.
