Still bleeding 5 weeks after mirina coil put in!

I had the Mirina put in 5 weeks ago and I'm still bleeding. It's not heavy but I have to wear a pad!

I'm starting to worry I will never be able to have sex again Sad Grin

The dr said it should stop after my next period would have been due.....but that was 9 days ago!

Is this normal? Should I get it taken out?

I had the mirina before about 5 years ago, and didn't bleed for 2 years while on it.

Thanks!

I bled for 11 months before I gave up and had it taken out. Doc kept saying it would settle but it never did. Confused

I've had mine for about 6 months and have only had about 4 days where I've not bled ,albeit very light mostly. TBH your Dr has misinformed you as it can take several months to settle down and I was advised that if it didn't stop after 6/7 months to take a short course of the mini pill to 'knock' the cycle back into place . IME bleeding after 5 weeks is par for the course .

Mine took about 4 months to settle. I still get periods but every month they are getting lighter & not painful at all, fantastic! (smile)

Same as Lego.
Took time to settle but then fantastic. Almost no bleeding or pain or pmt.

I've had mine for almost 9 months and have bled the whole time Sad Admittedly it was initially much lighter than it had been before but was pretty much including some level on spotting on a daily basis. then in august it stepped up a gear again and I've had two lots of four days without any bleeding or spotting, and more days than I care to think about of heavy clotty stringy yuck pouring out of me. It's now worse than it was before I had the bloody thing put in Angry

I'm booked back in with the gynae to discuss removal and other options to control this horrible bleeding.

Much empathy from me

I think I bled for about 6 weeks and I had decided that that was how it acted as a contraceptive-by stopping me having sex ever again.Hmm Then suddenly it stopped and have not had more than the odd spot for years. Grin

hugoagogo .. "have not had more than the odd spot for years".

How many years? Is this with the one coil? Do you have to have it changed at all?

I had my mirena fitted a month ago and the nurse told me it would be "cleaning house " for 3 to 6 weeks and then the bleeding would stop ! I hope she is right because it hasn't stopped yet ! I had it fitted hopefully to help stop heavy periods that were coming every 3 weeks...

I bled for months then it stopped and I've not had a period for years Smile

I had a mirena fitted April '12, bled to varying degrees until September, then had random periods until this summer and since then nothing.

It could take months, mine took 8. The bleeding was only minimal though.

When should you go and have them checked/changed? Does anybody know?

Report
BellaVita · 26/10/2013 17:17

You normally have a six week check up.

You are supposed to get them changed after 5 years.

Do they contact you BellaVita, or do you have to contact them?

The GP would normally say for you to make an appt for six weeks time to come back (they check it is still in situ).

When you have one fitted, they give you a card with a date on which is a reminder that you either have to make an appt for a new one or have it taken out.

To be fair, the GP said to me it could actually last around seven years so you do not have to make an appt right on the five year anniversary. I didn't want to take that chance though Grin

Can I hijack for a second? I've had a copper coil in for 3/4 months. My cycle has changed so now my period comes, this one has lasted 11 days so far, I get about a 16 day break before another
Wondering if it will settle or to change it for a mirena

I have a mirena, have just had it changed about a week ago, so on my second one. I had a bit of bleeding the morning it was changed and some spotting since, but nothing you could call a period.

After I had my youngest I had a copper coil, but it made me bleed really heavily and for 10 days at a time and I suffered from pmt (or whatever they call it nowadays) neither of which I had experienced pre coil.
