what are your experiences with copper coil...

Hello,

I had my nexplanon implant removed yesterday (Hurrah). I have been taking cerazette for 10 days in readiness for the removal of the implant. I have reached a point where I don't want to add more hormones to my body and have been researching the copper coil.

It appeals to me because it contains no hormones. I have a DC who has just turned 3 and a DC who is 18 months in between my pregnancies I was on cerazette and after my youngest DC was born I had nexplanon implant. I just feel I've been on an emotional hormonal rollercoaster and I want a break.

I wasn't on any contraception at all for 3 years before first DC was born (took a long time to fall pregnant) and I honestly felt brilliant during this time, despite the stresses of trying to conceive. Felt like I had my sh*t together and was able to manage my weight. Contraceptives seem to mess me up a bit.

Soooooo, copper coil seems good. Am I right in thinking it's the mirena coil that contains hormones and the copper coil has none?

Any experiences ladies? Was it painful having the copper coil fitted?

I've had the copper coil after child 2, because I wanted to avoid taking any more hormones. I ended up having a period that lasted a week and was painful every 20-21 days.

So I went back on the Cerazette, no periods, bliss. As I also suffer from unexplained abdo and pelvic pain I wondered whether that may have been caused by the coil, so had it removed, however that made no change, so don't think that the coil was to blame.

Having the coil fitted hurt like hell, but then I never had a child vaginally, so cervix was firmly closed.

Yep the copper coil relies on copper not hormones to work.

I react badly to hormonal contraception but have never had any trouble with copper coils.

I had the copper coil fitted 12 days ago. I also had the nexplanon removed. The fitting was slightly painful and I did struggle for a few hours after as the pain did get a lot worse and I have a high pain threshold! I have been bleeding all the time apart from one day And today it seems to have got a LOT heavier, I may have to go back to my go as I don't know if its normal. But as for everything else its fine, my appetite is back to normal and my skin is clearing up! Hopefully in the long run it will be worth it. Hope I've not scared you but I am being honest. I went for the copper coil for the same reasons as you, OP - artificial hormones via the pill for too long. Am now on my second having had the first out to conceive DC2.

Insertion, uncomfortable but bearable. Periods are heavier but manageable and not noticeably more painful (mine were quite painful pre-pill and pre-DCs and quite heavy, and they're better now with the coil and post DCs). Removal also uncomfortable but bearable.

So I like mine and will stick with it until DH finally mans up and gets the snip.

I had one fitted last week - fitting itself uncomfortable but ok (I have never given birth) and period-like pain for a while afterwards. I have since had no pain but bloody spotting for the last few days which is annoying because my periods have always been v v regular so I'm not used to bleeding between periods, but it's still early days so will leave it a bit to settle. If it doesn't I will call the GP to check all is ok

I've had mine just over a year. Periods are heavier (but only for 1 day each time, rest is a 1-mooncup-a-day job!) but feeling like 'me' is priceless!

Insertion was nothing, as I could still vividly remember childbirth at the time!

Just to balance I had mine for a year, bled for 3 weeks per cycle. If this wasnt bad enough I then got recurring bouts of thrush that were apparently nothing to do with it . I havent had thrush once in the 2.5 years since having the damn thing taken out. Never again hated it but obviously its just me .

I've had a copper coil twice. The first time I had no problems, just slightly heavier periods. Second time I bled for a month then had periods for a week every 15 days for a year, made life difficult to say the least.
Best used if you have light trouble free periods and no gynea issues I believe.

I'm on my second copper coil, having had the first out in order to conceive DC2. I find it no trouble. I do have heavier periods (5 days, more frequent changing of sanpro/mooncup) but I had very light 2.5 day periods before. If DP doesn't get the snip I will stick with this happily.

I just came on the boards to post about this! I decided on the copper coil as have reacted badly to both Dianette and Yasmin, am high stroke risk due to family history of migraines and wanted to stop with the hormones (really noticed a drop in my sex drive)

I had mine fitted today, was dreading it as had heard horror stories about the pain but it actually went really well! The fitting was fine, uncomfortable but totally bearable as long as I relaxed and kept breathing steadily. The ladies at the clinic were really helpful and supportive and overall alot better than I thought it would be.

I'm not in that much pain either, cramping only very occasionally although pretty intense when it does come. Have kept the next few days free so I can stay on the sofa in front of the telly, just in case it gets worse!
