Mirena coil - low sex drive and anxiety depression

I have had the mirena coil fitted for nearly 2 years now 4 months after the birth of my second child.

a few weeks after insertion I was diagnosed with severe suicidal postnatal depression which I was convinced was due to the coil but the doctors assured me they weren't.

I have suffered with severe anxiety since and also low sex drive (actually none exsistant). Having chatted to another friend she said that she had low sex drive until her coil came out and just wandered if anyone else had the same thing?

Really thinnking that I should have it taken out. Has anyone else suffered with the same thing?

Hi

yes, I have!! See my post about it perforating my womb.

It's funny, because before I had the mirena coil, all I heard about it was positive stories. So I decided to go for that rather than the copper coil (which I had had previously, and was fine, but had quite long periods with) because I liked the idea of really light/non-existant periods. Yes, I read the leaflet and saw the possible side effects but on any form of medication anyone ever takes, even the humble paracetamol, there are a list of side effects as long as your arm and I just thought, well they have to list them all otherwise they might get sued!! But they won't happen to me, and anyway, if they do they probably won't be that bad.

I had the mirena put in at the same time as 2 of my friends, who both went on to have theirs out only 2-3 months later (because of the side effects). They then swore they felt alot better. I wanted to wait longer than that believing that the side effects would ease. That why I waited almost 2 years before decided to change it, in the hope that time would help. It's still inside me (see other post) but I am going to be so interested to see if when I have it out, I feel better.

I too have very low sex drive, it was never massive but certainly more than now!! But, is that because i have 4 kids and am tired and life gets in the way?? Time will tell.

I really feel for you. With my 1st child I had severe PN depression. If you google 'mirena and depression' you will get thousands of hits, see what you think after reading some of that. But I always try to bear in mind there are lots of people out there who swear by the mirena and are 100% happy with it.

It's a difficult one and as i said, for me , time will tell.

Take care

Poppyella

Thanks for you post Poppyella.

I guess that is why I had left mine in for so long as I had heard great things about it. Maybe only a true test will be as you say to have it taken out and see if I feel better!

Will keep you informed x
