Lynette, don't know the exact answer to your question but I have found the India Office records at the British Library quite helpful, see here, India Office and here here for details of what they've got

OK, so if someone was born in Indida, in the 30's and has a baptism certificate, but no birth certificate, is there any way of ever finding out if they were adopted as a baby?
