I researched my mother's maternal grandfather about 8 years ago as he died in mysterious circumstances ie. my mum said no-one would talk about it. It turned out he died in an asylum , I even managed to get the copies of the admission papers which were really interesting.
His name was 'Schutz', and I think he was born in London. I would like to find where his family came from . I have his marriage certificate and father's name. DD is visiting Aushwitz in October and it would be really interesting to know if there is a jewish connection, as I recall my mum who died last year mentioning this. . i have meant to get back onto this for years . I can access ancestory .com at the local library free .

Could give me tips about the most efficient way to go- 8 years ago there wasn't as much choice !

You could try the website Ancestry has immigration records so you may find his name listed there. Good luck!

Colette - look up the father's name on google, if it comes up in the London Gazette it may show that the family were naturalised. You may then be able to get the naturalisation records from the National Archives - these can sometimes produce lots of information.

Jewish burials can also be much better recorded than others, giving the exact location in the cemetery and occasionally even a photo of the stone - try cemeteryscribes too.
