Teenager new to ballet- what do they wear?!

My 15 year old has danced since she was a toddler but never ballet. She's about to start to add another 'string to her bow' but as a body conscious teen she is stressing about what to wear as her usual dance classes just means leggings and a t shirt! The school have said leotard, tights and pumps- can anyone give us a steer on what style most girls wear, what's comfiest etc?
She hates her arms and thighs (no, there's nothing wrong with them and we're working on her body confidence!) so I want to make sure she feels comfortable whilst not standing out any more than she already does as a beginner in a class full of more experienced dancers!
Any tips much appreciated 😃

What type of class is she attending? Is it a Grade class or a more general non syllabus class. If the latter then I'd go for maybe a plain black cap sleeved or wide strap leotard rather than camisole and a black wrap skirt or hot pant type shorts over the top can give a bit more confidence. Some teen/adult ballet classes allow black tights instead of pink.

Ballet uniform is pretty formal, by that age girls would usually be wearing pink/flesh coloured tights, black leotard and ballet slippers. My DS is 16 and does ballet (RAD dance school) that’s what all the girls wear. Teacher needs to see arms and shoulders and the line of the legs to check correct form. Hopefully she won’t feel self conscious once she gets going as everyone will be dressed the same, there are all kinds of shapes and sizes in my DS’s class and they all wear the same. I hope she enjoys it 🙂

It's more of a recreational class but they seem quite relaxed about dancewear- she already has an array of hot pants and leotards but most are long sleeved or brightly coloured/ lacy! She loved the taster session despite some reservations so I just want to keep her motivated and comfortable:

I wear shorts and a long sleeved bodysuit for my ballet class.

Thanks, this is all really useful. I think she probably has enough in her dance drawers to stumble through the first few weeks then she can make specific requests when she sees what everyone else is wearing!

If relaxed recreational class, you DD can wear whatever she feels comfortable in! My DS is very serious about his ballet 😏

The school have give an indication leotard and tights. DD's adult ballet class says black tights and any colour leotard and this is what they expect.

I think any leotard will be fine for the first couple of weeks and she can see what others are wearing, if there is a suggested uniform etc. ours wear navy camisole leotards with pink ballet tights as do a lot near us. nearly always black or navy at that age

Many teenagers wear a black leotard unless their dance school has a specific colour. Navy and burgundy are common as well. Usually camisole. Pink ballet tights without a seam and flat ballet shoes. She will need to ask what sort of ballet shoes, as they come in leather, satin and canvas. The shoes will need to be properly fitted at a dancewear shop, they are almost impossible to buy online unless you already know the exact size/width etc, and ballet shoe sizing is weird. They need to fit like a glove without cramping the toes.

The school might have some second-hand shoes, a lot of them do and she could strike lucky there.
