Flute music for Grade 7-8 boy

I am hoping someone can help. I am a non musically trained mum with a musical teenage ds who is currently working towards his ABRSM Grade 8 exam. There is no rush for the exam, and ds likes to play lots of music off syllabus, and I would like to buy him one or two new books for Christmas. He loves classical and popular music, but there is so much choice and I have no idea what is the right level for him when I look at the music.

Can anyone recommend any books or even sheet music for me to buy him? I think ideally I would buy one classical book and one more popular. Thanks in advance!

So much lovely music for that standard!
Gaubert - Madrigal
Bozza - Aria
John Rutter - Suite Antique
Richard Rodney Bennett - Summer Music
York Bowen - Sonata
Dave Heath - Out of the Cool
Poulenc - Sonata
...to name but a few!

For a present, I always think collections are good, so you could look at The Flautist' s Collection books.
I'll be back with more suggestions! :-)

Floottoot - thanks so much your lovely list. Huge apologies for taking months to come back and thank you.

I have just enjoyed listening to Jame Galway play Madrigal on Youtube. Lovely.

DH bought my ds some music for Christmas but I am off to purchase some more from your list.
Thanks again.
