April Music Thread

We've managed to fill up the March thread, so I give you April's, around 10 hours early. Don't use it all up at once!

The music threads are for learners of ALL ages and stages, including beginners and adult learners.

My kids Goo (11) and Rara (8) break up from school today, thank goodness. Rara is off sick at the moment, in any case, but they both need a break. They did their music exams this week. Goo got a distinction for her Grade 7 Flute, and we are awaiting the results of Rara's Grade 1 Clarinet, plus a couple of my pupils. They will probably come on my birthday - the ABRSM ones often do.

Next term, we have a big community concert at the local high school - all the feeder schools take part. Goo could do Grade 7 Recorder and/ or Grade 4 Piano, but I don't think she wants to. Rara is doing Grade 3 Cello. My Year 6 Recorders have been asked to play in the local Festival gala concert, and I'm sure there will be primary school leavers' performances too.

Hope Rara continues to feel better waffle. I'm mum to ds 12 who plays trumpet and dd 9 who is sort of learning piano and loves to sing. Not quite the end of term for us here as dd has a show and festival tomorrow , but nearly there!! I'm hoping for a quieter term next term though there are rumours that ds might do grade 7 trumpet (we shall see) . Ds is looking forward to his NCO course this holiday ( and we are looking forward to a little holiday in Dorset we've never been ) Smile

and mine :) dd so excited!

DP took his first ever music exam today - never having played anything until a year ago. Grade 1 duly done and he even asked the examiner for (and got) a selfie with him!!!

Goodness Waffle you get lots of notice for your Festival Concert. Ours is the same week!

We seem to have lots of concerts at present, plus DS2 is as always super busy on the run-up to Easter (Cathedral Choir).

DS1 (tuba/trombone) is home from uni, but has fitted back into local music. Also his girlfriend has recently begun trombone and he is playing in her brass band concert with her tonight, which I think is lovely!

DD is temporarily putting music on one side after Easter to concentrate on AS, she doesnt find it relieves stress.

We have enjoyed an exam free term, I think next term will be also (aside from AS).

stringchild that's awesome. Glad he had such a positive experience.

Congratulations to all the great results on the March thread too.

Double Come back! It's not that complicated! There's a free score - have a look, it is really easier than it sounds and looks.

DD is doing grade 6 piano exam on Monday. Stresssssssssssy weekend coming up.

She is a "high pass" exam performer - not the stratospheric marks I tend to see here on MN, but she loves music and has fun playing (except the A piece - always the A piece collapses a couple of weeks before exam. Hey-ho...).

Report
Fleurdelise · 31/03/2017 17:18

Beyond dd does the same, starts making mistakes in her A piece few days before exams. Last time it was literally in the practice room before the exam. Incidentally somehow though she manages to pull together and gets the highest mark it it also. Confused

We're in the piano lesson now and dd is killing summertime. In a bad way. Hopefully she'll manage to learn it as her teacher is starting to panic also now.

Fleurdelise · 31/03/2017 17:19

And good luck to your dd Beyond!

Prada how did it go?

The days of mum's musical taxi are drawing to a close now (I hope) as DS has just had his first driving lesson. I can't wait to be made redundant. I'd like to ditch the job of manager too but at the moment I don't trust him not to double book himself or agree to play when he doesn't want to but doesn't feel able to say no.

He has AS exams too but they seem to be those special ones that require no revision. No doubt panic will set in closer to the date.

Just checking in - we don't have any exams planned at the moment...maybe G4 cornet next term . But as we don't have a cornet teacher that could be tricky (dd didn't gel with him...he kept saying she wasn't trying when I knew she really was so I wasn't happy either).

Then maybe G5 violin at Xmas. She's got a week of orchestra camp next week which should help with enthusiasm...

Grin wow to MrString, especially on the selfie!

I have a 9 yrs old in yr4 who plays violin and piano. Piano now is her 1st as we have been struggling finding a suitable violin teacher.
Fleur: a week break only playing something fun, something she knows then come back. We did over cook with our g1 that we thought it was a guaranteed distiction, in the end she was bored learning it too long and didnt play it as nicely as usual. I listened to Summertime few days ago the first time, it is a beautiful piece, no wonder she likes it.

Gosh forgot the introduction: dd is 9 in year 5 (summer born right in the middle of August, yeah I know, didn't plan that very well) and she plays piano and clarinet. She is due to take grade 5 on piano next term and possibly grade 3 clarinet, not decided for sure just yet. I also have a 15 yo DS in year 11 (another summer born last day of July, yep, I didn't learn my lesson the first time) who is taking GCSEs in May.

Green she can't afford anything else than exam pieces at the moment, her teacher gave her a 2 weeks deadline to know all her pieces in rhythm so they have enough time to polish them. Two of her pieces, Scarlatti and Summertime, are only half known. But she's still having lessons over the Easter break.

Thank you Waffle for setting up a new thread while you are busy looking after poorly Rara. I hope she gets better soon.

I have DS (9) who plays piano and violin. He took G5 piano a year ago and now studying G6-7 pieces. He hasn't done any exam for violin so it'd been nicely carefree learning up until recently. However, all of a sudden he got into the audition process with his once carefree violin, and has just done three of them this month...

He got an offer from two places right after the audition, then he went to the third one which was his first choice yet unfortunately unwell. However, I have just received an email from them that he passed the first round and now the second round is scheduled in April. Wow. Obviously we are very happy for him to have managed to come this far, but this means he still needs to keep practising over the holiday!

Sorry for finishing the last thread Waffle.....

Never, I might have another look at that piece - next time I get a bit of free time.

By way of introduction, I have DD1 (14) who has just done G6 oboe and working towards G6 on sax and DD2 (10) who is possibly taking G7 bassoon next term, and perhaps G2 guitar. She started on guitar first, but it got a bit eclipsed by the bassoon. Also G5 theory due next term. No pressure then....

DD1 finished for the holidays yesterday, but DD2 has another week to go. Limping through to the end.

Bugger. Just tried to post on the old thread! Thank you for asking everyone but today did not go well Sad she made mistakes where she had never made them before. She was very tearful when she came out but held it together in the room. Shame as at yesterday's mock she was on for a merit. If she passes it'll be because of the nice dress Wink. Off on hols to forget about it Grin good luck to minibeyond! Well done minikutik!

Forgot the intro! Miniprada is 11 (yr6) doing G6 piano and on for G7 violin next term.

Report
Fleurdelise · 31/03/2017 20:52

Prada if miniprada is like dd she's probably only remembering the bad bits. Anyway if yesterday she was at a merit level I am sure she will pass even if she made mistakes. Enjoy your holiday!

Kutik73 · 31/03/2017 21:11

Thanks Double and Prada, though no celebration here yet as it's not that he has got a place! I know the one in April would be the hardest challenge for DS. Fingers and toes crossed!

Prada, we tend to remember only worst bits, don't we? And very often you realise all was not that bad in the end. So you may be surprised nicely when you get the result. At least you know your DD is very much capable of receiving merit. She is doing wonderfully well.

Report
Greenleave · 31/03/2017 21:13

Nice Kutik! Fingers crossed for the next round!
Prada: fingers crossed for the best possible outcome. Your comment about the dress made me remember we did really badly with NCO last year(2 weeks practice, no performance experience, suddenly out of tune and all wet and late for the audition, no rehearsal with the accompanist, I knew it didnt go well). There was although a small hope that with a beautiful sparkling dress and an Asian dedicated pale skin face, long hair and her quirky playing style then they might find other thing in her. We failed to impress though hahaha(we truly not deserve it) however the comment did say she plays with a style(might be due to many hours laying on the sofa playing) Grin

Fleur: there are ups and downs, downs moment now might be for ups later.

O..M..G..! April thread starting in March-this is quite a change! I felt guilty not to keep up with the threads, now I feel that it was a good thing - if I were commenting-we would have to move to April thread a week ago! Grin

Thanks again Waffle for starting a new thread and my April resolution will be to read April thread regularly :)

I have dd9 violin/piano/recorder and ds6 - violin and is starting piano after Easter break. We are waiting for dd's violin exam results.

Grade 5 theory for dd in June and grade 1 violin for my baby Bear - cannot believe this! Shock Interestingly, my dd took her grade 1 violin at 6.3 and so will ds....

Well done Goo! Congratulations with an excellent results!
Stringchild-your story about selfie with the examiner made me laugh :) :) :)
BeyondThePage-best of luck with the exam on Monday!
Fleur, I was laughing at myself-you wrote 'killing summertime'-I was thinking -what did Fleur mean? She is not happy to wait for her dd to finish lesson at this lovely almost summer weather? And then I remembered that this piece is in exam syllabus :) ;) Should not really read this thread at night :)
Prada, wow! Mini Prada is going to have a busy term! What a clever girl to do two exams!
